Cardiothoracic Surgery
The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery was created from department of surgery on 30th October 2012. After its creation the department started functioning independently and doing all types of closed cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery .In October 2016 the long cherished dream of having open heart surgery in JNMC was fulfilled with mitral valve replacement surgery being carried out.
In 2017 the department collaborated with Government of India under Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karykram and started free heart surgery for children under 18 years of age ,till date we have done more than 200 complex congenital surgeries with excellent results.Over the years our faculty has become experienced in doing complex cardiac and vascular surgeries, another field of our expertise is foreign body retrievals from esophagus and bronchus. We are providing teaching and training to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as we are involved in training of paramedical students like Diploma in Operation theatre management, Diploma in endoscopy management , and Diploma in Physiotherapy.
The Department also has Memorandum of understanding(MoU) with Healing little hearts(HLH) ,a UK based NGO for collaborating in field of complex cardiac surgery. The department has gradually expanded its repertoire of surgery and started small incison cardiac surgery in 2019. In the year 2021 department has started doing valve repairs, which makes it one of the few government centres in India doing valve repairs. Recently the cardiothoracic surgeons did a arterial switch operation for transposition of great arteries(TGA ) on a 20 day kid considered to be one of the most difficult operations performed by cardiac surgeons .
We have three faculty members Prof. Mohd. Azam Haseen working as Professor and Dr syed Shamayal Rabbani and Dr.Aamir Mohammad as Assistant Professor Cardiothoracic Surgery. Our vision for future is to start M.Ch. Cardiothoracic Surgery Course and make our department a centre for excellence where surgeons can get trained in this difficult art of surgery and serve the humanity.
