The Department of Medicine was established in 1963 and it progressed steadily since then. In the year 1993, three new departments namely Psychiatry, Dermatology and T.B. & Chest Diseases were separated out from Medicine Department.

There is continuous increase in clinical and teaching load of the department. The Annual intake of MBBS students has increased from 50 to 150, M.D. students from 6 to 12. Recently, the intake of MD students has been increased to 21. Staff members of the Department are also involved in teaching and training of BDS students and various diploma courses. Presently, there are 6 units in the department. Academic activities in the form of seminars / Case Presentations / Journal Clubs are held daily, from 8 - 9 a.m. (Monday to Saturday except Fridays). All postgraduates and all teaching staff members, participate in the seminar.

Postgraduates are given full facilities and responsibilities; in OPD, IPD and casualty, where they work under the direct supervision of consultants & senior residents. The department organizes regular conferences, symposia and seminars of national and state levels. Also, extension and invited lectures are organized on a regular basis.

To establish super specialities, teachers were sponsored to get DM in cardiology, Nephrology and Endocrinology and services of these super specialists were utilized to establish Centre of Cardiology and R.G. Centre of Diabetes and Endocrinology in 2010. Besides this, following special clinics are managed by the department for super speciality care.

1. Nephrology Clinic : Monday and Friday

2. Geriatric (Senior citizen) Clinic: Monday

3. Neurology Clinic: Wednesday

4. Haematology Clinic: Tuesday

5. Gastroenterology Clinic: Saturday

6. Rheumatology Clinic: Thursday

 

Nephrology division is providing dialysis facilities for the last thirty years with a well established dialysis unit providing round the clock dialysis support to critically ill patients. Procedures like plasmapheresis, percutaneous kidney biopsy, permcath placement, CAPD catheter placement and follow-up of pre as well post-renal transplant patients is being undertaken on a regular basis.

 

Gastroenterological Endoscopic facilities are being provided at the state of the art Gastroenterology Lab of the department. Endoscopies, colonoscopies, endoscopic procedures like EVBL etc are being regularly done at GE Lab. Specialised Hepatology services and treatment of chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis are also available in the GE clinic

 

Recently, state of the art Medical ICU has been established and operating very effectively under the department.

 

The Medicine OPD caters to the maximum number of patients attending the hospital.
