Dr. M. Arshad completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. (Zoology) degree from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, India, and Ph.D. degree from Central Drug Research Institute (CSIR-CDRI), Lucknow, India. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Center of Osteo-Articular and Dental Tissue Engineering, University of Nantes, France. On his return to India, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Zoology, University of Lucknow. He recently joined the Department of Zoology at AMU as an Associate Professor.

Dr. Arshad’s core research interests lie in the areas of endocrinology and cell biology. His research work is centered on hormonal regulation of bone metabolism, cellular and molecular mechanism of bone remodeling, cross talk of bone and cartilage cells, characterization of promising therapeutics for postmenopausal osteoporosis, diabetic osteopathy, osteoarthritis and endocrine cancer, using cell culture and animal models. He has established a base line data of bone turnover rate in rat model in relation to estrous cycle, pregnancy and lactation. He studied relation of vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism with bone mineral density in north Indian postmenopausal women. Currently he is working on the characterization of fish derived collagen and fatty acids targeting its effect on osteoblast/osteoclast/chondrocyte proliferation and apoptosis.

He has published more than eighty research papers and review articles in high impact, reputed journals like Cell Proliferation, Cell Biology International, Gene, Journal of  Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Nutrition and Cancer, PLOS ONE, Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B etc. He has also edited two books.
He has been a Principal Investigator/Co-investigator of several major research projects funded by the DST-SERB, ICMR, UGC and UP-CST and has supervised/mentored a number of doctoral students and post doctoral research fellows.
