Syed Ali Mohammad Naqvi was born in 1953 in a very prominent family of  ulama known in India as Khanvadae Ijtihad. His father was Allama Ali Naqi Naqavi, a world renowned scholar, Professor of Aligarh Muslim University and Dean Faculty of Theology.

Syed Ali Mohammad Naqvi had his early religious education under guidance of his father. Then graduated in Theology from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. In 1974 went to Iraq, and then Iran for higher Islamic Studies. He studied under such great scholars as Allama Murtaza Mutahhari, Dr Mufatteh, .Dr Izzati and Prof SahibuzZamani.

In Iran Ali Mohammad Naqvi become prominent as scholar. His articles appeared (in Persian Language) in reputed Journals. More than a dozen Books were published in Iran.
He became Member of Board of Text-Books in Iranian Ministry of Education and jointly worked with Dr Haddad Adel on text-book Project. Four of his books were prescribed in secondary and University level and taught throughout Iran, a unique distinction for any non-Iranian

In 1984 he went to London and worked on a research project. This book was published entitled A Manual of Islamic Beliefs and Practice from Muhammadi Trust of Great Britain.

After 9/11, when the movement for Interfaith Dialogue and Interfaith understanding gained much more importance Prof. Ali Mohammad Naqvi was invited several times in United States of America and worked with Prof. Swidler and Prof.  Paul Knitter and other pioneers of Interfaith Movement. He had a series of Lectures and interactions in United States of America and was conferred Honorary citizenship of the city of Louisville by the Mayor of that city.
  After return to India Prof Naqvi worked on a Project on Comparative Religions. The voluminous work was published in two volumes entitled  A Survey of Indian Religious Thought. This is an in-depth study of the development of Indian Religious Thought from the time of Rig Veda down to our own times.. The distinctions of the book are:

Ø  First time Indian Classical and modern Thought introduced in Iran and in Persian language. Before that the works only dealt with Classical thought but thought of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Keshab Chandra Sen, Birindra Nath and Rabindra Nath Tagore, Rama Krishna, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Auribindo and Dr Radhakrishnan was unknown in Iran. Through this work for the first time modern Indian Religious Thought  was introduced in Iran.

Ø  First time the Hindu Thought is studied and analyzed by a Muslim Religious Scholar in depth . In past Al-Beirūnī and  Dara Shikoh were the pioneers. But after that there were only cursory works and no in-depth study was done.

Ø  First detailed comparative study f Hindu and Muslim Thought

He also worked on a project of Tafseer of the Qurân and two volumes were published. 
   He, along with prominent religious figure, Dr Kalbe Sadiq, founded a modern religious Seminary named MadinatulUloom at Aligarh which later developed as M.U College. 
  In 2006 he was directly appointed as professor of Theology in A.M.U. and later become Chairman of Shia Theology and then Dean, Faculty of Theology. He served two terms as the Dean ,Faculty of Theology and 3 terms as Chairman, Department of Shia Theology.

In 2017, after establishment of the Centre for Interfaith Understanding, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Tariq Mansoor appointed  Prof Naqvi, as the first Director of the Centre for Interfaith Understanding. Under the patronage of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Tariq Mansoor, Prof. Naqvi organized historic Interfaith Conferences and established a network of Faith leaders and intellectuals. In 2018, the Vice Chancellor appointed Prof Naqvi as the Director of prestigious Sir Syed Academy and also Publication Division of the University.

Prof Ali Mohammad Naqvi participated in International and National Interfaith Conferences and workshops and extensively delivered lectures. Among them are the following:
