​Two foreign language research scholars to visit Spain under a research project

Two PhD scholars from the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University, Harsh Chaudhary and Javed Khan have been selected for a three-month research visit to the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. This opportunity is part of the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC) project granted to Dr. Mayuresh Kumar, an Assistant Professor in the department. They are scheduled to leave for Spain on December 7. 

Dr Kumar said that the project, titled, "Developing Applications for Learning Spanish in India Using Artificial Intelligence and Digital Media," had been given to him by the Ministry of Education, Government of India earlier, and a workshop, a special course and an international conference has already been organized under this project. The inclusion of this research visit further enriches the project, adding more value to its outcomes, he said. 

He further said that the scholars will spend their time as Research Assistants in the Department of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence at Complutense University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and the knowledge and skills they acquire will greatly benefit the department.

"This international collaboration is a significant achievement for the department and reflects our efforts to promote global academic ties," said Dr. Kumar. 

Prof. Muhammad Azhar, Dean, Faculty of International Studies and Chairperson of the department expressed happiness over the achievement, adding that this will provide as an impetus for other students to explore such research opportunities.

Nine Foreign Language students get placement

Nine German language students from the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University have secured placement offers from leading multinational companies, reflecting the growing relevance and employability of foreign language education in diverse industries.
Mansi Jain has been placed as a Translation Associate at Amazon, Khadijatul Kubra has joined ATX Learning as a Lead Generation Executive. Inaamurrahman has been appointed as a German Language Trainer at GAC GoGermany. Md. Farhan Ahmad has been hired as an Onboard Specialist by Amazon. Abdul Hakim has secured a position as a German Language Assistant Trainer with Magic Billion. Md. Raghib Anwar has joined EUTECH Chamber as a Project Coordinator. Abul Khair Azad has been hired by Accenture as a Cloud Tech Support Analyst. Md. Ashraf Ali has also joined Accenture, taking on the role of SW/App Cloud Tech Support Analyst. Praveen Kumar Sharma has been selected as a People Coordinator at EUTECH Chamber.

AMU faculty delivers keynote address at an International Conference

Dr. Subair, Assistant Professor of German in the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University delivered the keynote address at the International Conference on Community Service, themed, "Strengthening the Role of Community Service in the Digital Era: Towards Sustainable Community Transformation," held online by the Office for Research and Community Service, IAIN Palangka Raya, Indonesia.

Dr. Subair highlighted the importance of integrating digital tools and resources into community service efforts, especially in regions where access to technology remains limited. He emphasized that the digital era provides unique opportunities for sustainable transformation by making information and services more accessible to diverse communities.

Seven German Language Students from AMU become eligible for DAAD Scholarship

Seven students from the German Studies Section of the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have been selected for DAAD Scholarship, enabling them to participate in summer courses offered in Germany for international students and graduates in 2025.

One MA first year student Mr. Ragib and six BA third year students Zainul Abedin, Azhar Zia, Abdul Wasey, Hareem Baig, Basil Igbal and M. Kamran have successfully cleared the B1 and above level of onSET Test for German language proficiency conducted at the Department on 29th October 2024.

As part of the scholarship selection process, the German section of the Department collaborated with the DAAD office in Delhi to organize a qualifying test at AMU.

DAAD representative Dr. Jan Helge Weidemann, DAAD Lecturer at the University of Delhi from Germany oversaw the examination at the Prof. M.N. Faruqui Computer Centre, AMU.

The test was followed by a resource talk delivered by Dr. Jan on the topic “Study in Germany: Ways and Opportunities”. He discussed various pathways available for international students to pursue higher education in Germany. He highlighted essential aspects such as scholarships, application processes, and the benefits of studying in a globally recognized academic environment.

The selected students are scheduled to depart for Germany to commence their summer courses in July 2025. Valued at 2,559 Euros, the scholarship covers their airfare, accommodation, tour to historical locations in Germany and tuition fees for the month-long Summer course.

Notably, last year also, two students of the German Studies Section got the scholarship.

Professor Muhammad Azhar, Chairman of the Department and Dean, Faculty of International Studies, congratulated the students stating that this achievement underscores the calibre of education imparted by our faculty members. With the growing demand for foreign languages, this scholarship will serve as a significant milestone in promoting foreign language studies in our region.

Mr. Syed Salman Abbas, Assistant Professor of the German section, commended the students, remarking, “This marks the second time in our department’s history that students have been honoured with such a prestigious scholarship as part of their ongoing coursework. We extend our gratitude to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for their special attention to our students.”

AMU Faculty Explores Urdu Translation of Immanuel Kant’s Philosophy

Mr. Syed Salman Abbas, Assistant Professor (German) at the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), recently presented a research paper on the Urdu translation of Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason by Syed Abid Husain. His talk was part of the conference titled Mensch, Maschine und Modernität, organized by the Goethe Society of India in collaboration with Savitribai Phule Pune University and the German Academic Exchange Service, India, and hosted by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune.

In his paper, titled Translation as a Site of Making and Unmaking of Epistemic Expansion: The Case of the First Urdu Translation of Kant's Kritik der Reinen Vernunft, Mr. Abbas examined the intricate connections between Modernity, Philosophy, German Studies, and South Asian history. He highlighted the power of translation to challenge and reshape the epistemic authority of modernity in a South Asian context.

AMU faculty presents paper at an international conference in Las Vegas

Mr Mohd Yasin, Assistant Professor (Chinese), Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University presented a paper on "China's Participation in UN Peace Operations: Developmental Peace over Liberal Peace?" at the 66th Annual Conference of the American Association for Chinese Studies, recently held at the Department of Political Science, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA.

Mr Yasin highlighted China's increasing influence in the world's largest multilateral institution and shared insights on whether China's developmental peace complements to or differs from the liberal peace preferred by the West.

He said that the conference featured two thought-provoking roundtables: "The 2024 Taiwanese Elections and Their Implication for Cross-strait Relations" and "Harris vs. Trump 2024: Security and Economic Implications for US Relations with Taiwan, China, the Indo-Pacific, and the Rest of the World'.

Kant and Kafka Day observed at the Department of Foreign Language, AMU on 08.10.2024

The Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) hosted Kant & Kafka Day, which was marked by expert talks, student presentations, and cultural activities. The two-day event was organized by the German Section of the Department and was designed to delve into the philosophical and literary contributions of Immanuel Kant and Franz Kafka. This year is of special significance as it marks the Tercentennial of Immanuel Kant’s birth and the Centennial of Franz Kafka’s passing.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, Department of West Asian Studies emphasized the relevance of Kant’s transcendentalism and Kafka’s existentialist themes in today’s socio-cultural and philosophical contexts. He highlighted how such events foster cross-disciplinary discourse, enriching the academic atmosphere of AMU. MA students from the German section presented readings and translations of Kafka’s texts in Urdu, adding a unique cultural dimension to the academic discussions.

The session was chaired by Prof. Mohammad Azher, Chairman of the Department and Dean of the Faculty of International Studies. The convenors, Mr. Syed Salman Abbas, Assistant Professor in German at AMU welcomed the dignitaries while Dr. Suman Singh, and Dr. Subair PM, Assistant Professors in German introduced resource persons.

Inaugural session was followed by two expert talks. The first talk was delivered by Prof. Dr. Rosy Singh from the Centre of German Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Her lecture, titled "New Impulses in the Reception of Franz Kafka," explored Kafka’s evolving interpretations in the global literary landscape and offered fresh insights into his complex narrative structures.

The second expert talk by Prof. Dr. Babu Thaliath, also from the Centre of German Studies at JNU, on "The Topicality of Kant’s Transcendentalism" drew connections between Kant’s metaphysical propositions and their applicability in modern philosophical inquiries, highlighting how Kant’s work continues to influence contemporary thought.

On the occasion, "Ein Bericht für eine Akademie" (A Report to an Academy), a film by Franz Kafka was screened. The film beautifully encapsulated Kafka’s narrative style and existential angst, setting the tone for the academic discussions that followed.The discussion was moderated by director of the film Mr. Vaibhav Abnave, a faculty member from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

In addition to the expert talks, the programme featured a series of cultural events, including a quiz competition and a meme-making contest, which saw active participation from students.

Prof. Mohammad Azher, Chairman of the Department remarked that such activities were designed to make philosophical discussions accessible and engaging, allowing participants to express their understanding of Kant and Kafka’s ideas in creative ways.

AMU faculty delivers a talk on Franz Kafka at the University of Oxford

Mr Syed Salman Abbas, Assistant Professor (German), Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University, presented a research paper on Franz Kafka, one of the major figures of 20th century litterateurs at an international conference, titled “Kafka Transformative Communities,” held at the University of Oxford, UK. The conference was hosted by Wadham College drawing participation from leading scholars worldwide.

Mr. Abbas’s paper, “Naiyer Masud Translating Franz Kafka: Finding Kins in the Processes of Minoritisation”, explored the nuanced intersections between the works of Naiyer Masud, an eminent Urdu short story writer and translator, and Franz Kafka. His discussed how both writers grappled with themes of alienation, identity, and marginalization, establishing a unique comparative framework between Kafka's existential narratives and Masud’s adaptations in the context of Indian literature.

Highlighting the impact of translation as a cultural and philosophical bridge, Mr. Abbas emphasized how literary works can transcend geographical and linguistic boundaries to foster a deeper understanding of shared human experiences.

International Conference on AI and Digital Media in Foreign Language Pedagogy Begins at AMU on 25.09.2024 and 26.09.2024

The Department of Foreign Languages at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) inaugurated its International Conference on "AI and Digital Media in Foreign Language Pedagogy" today at the Kennedy Auditorium. This two-day hybrid conference has attracted prominent scholars, educators, and researchers from India and abroad to discuss the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in language education.

A significant highlight of the opening ceremony was the release of the Book of Abstracts, which offers a comprehensive overview of the diverse topics to be discussed during the conference.

The event began with a welcome address by Prof. Mohammad Azhar, Dean of the Faculty of International Studies. He noted that AI's integration into education is essential for meeting the evolving needs of learners worldwide.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Rajiv Saxena from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), who explored the evolving role of AI in reshaping educational methodologies. He set the tone for the conference, encouraging participants to rethink traditional approaches to language teaching and learning through the application of AI tools.

Distinguished speakers included Prof. Minu Bakshi, former professor at JNU, who drew comparisons between traditional teachers and AI, stating that while AI is a powerful tool, it cannot replace the irreplaceable roles of teachers in education.

Prof. M.J. Warsi, Chairperson of the Department of Linguistics at AMU, discussed the dynamic and constantly evolving nature of language pedagogy. He remarked, “Language pedagogy must continually adapt to the times, and with the ongoing digital revolution, AI plays a crucial role in transforming how languages are taught and learned.”

In her virtual address, Dr. Elena Remizova, Director of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in New Delhi, praised AMU's initiative and spoke about the growing relevance of AI and digital platforms in education, emphasizing their significance in global language pedagogy.

His Excellency Mr. Juan Angulo, Ambassador of Chile to India, highlighted the importance of integrating AI into language pedagogy. He extended an invitation for collaboration between Chilean universities and AMU for educational and cultural exchange. Mr. Nicolas Tota, Deputy Counsellor of Chile, also contributed by sharing insights into Chile's educational landscape.

The conference concluded with remarks from Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, former Vice Chancellor of AMU and the Patron of the conference. He commended the Department of Foreign Languages for its forward-thinking efforts, stating, "The integration of AI in linguistic studies is reshaping education and opening new opportunities for innovation."

Dr. Mayuresh Kumar, the convener of the conference, remarked, "This is an incredible opportunity for our students and faculty to engage with cutting-edge developments in AI and digital media. 

Prof. Rakshanda F. Fazli from the Department of West Asian Studies and North African Studies offered a vote of thanks. The event was conducted by Ms. Sidra Ahmed, with Co-convenors Dr. Murad Khan and Dr. Sawan K. Singh facilitating the proceedings. Participants from 18 institutions worldwide are part of this conference.

Lecture held on Taiwan and India’s Cultural Convergence on 14.09.2024

Ms. Chang Shin Yun, a Taiwanese Scholar and visiting faculty at Amity University, Noida delivered a talk on “Taiwan and India’s Cultural Convergence: Exploring Opportunities in Multicultural Context” at the Chinese Division of the Department of Foreign Languages (DFL), Aligarh Muslim University on 14.09.2024. 

She talked about the literature, society, lifestyle and scholarship opportunities in Taiwan and urged the students to look for new techniques to improve their Chinese.

Earlier, welcoming the guest speaker, Mr Md Yasin, the convener of the event, discussed various issues related to Taiwan and Taiwanese people and highlighted the importance of Taiwan as India’s strategic partner.

Prof. Mohammad Azher, Chairperson, DFL and Dean, Faculty of International Studies, said that the lecture has provided the students with an opportunity to get introduced to Taiwan in a better manner.

AMU faculty wins international award in Moscow

Dr. Ravinder Singh, Assistant Professor of Russian in the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University has been honoured with the XXIV International Pushkin Award in Moscow, Russia at an event organized by the Federal State Budgetary Department "Editorial Office of the Rossiyskaya Gazeta" and the Department of External Economic and International Relations of the city of Moscow.

The Award ceremony was attended by the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cultural Cooperation, Mikhail Shvydkoi, Minister of the Moscow Government, Head of the Moscow City Department of the Ministry of Defense Sergey Cheremin, Director of the Moscow City Duma Dmitry Kozhaev, Yadviga Yuferova – Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Rossiyskaya Gazeta and Nikita Gusev – Acting Rector of the Pushkin State Institute of the Russian Language.

During his visit to Moscow, Dr. Singh visited several Russian universities and educational institutes and held talks with renowned pedagogues, poets and writers, who expressed willingness to collaborate with AMU for academic exchange.

Six Chinese language students get scholarship for higher studies in China, Taiwan

Four regular and two MA passed students of Chinese at the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University have received scholarship from the government of China to pursue higher studies in Chinese universities.

Prof. Mohammad Azher, Dean, Faculty of International Studies and Chairman, Department of Foreign Languages said that out of four students who completed their BA in Chinese this year, three students namely, Azib Khan, Arshi Arif and Firdaus Alam have been awarded one-year full scholarship by the China Scholarship Council to study at the Yunnan Normal University, Wuhan University and Beijing Language and Culture University, respectively, while another student, Abdullah Yameen has received (Taiwanese) Huayu Enrichment Scholarship to study at the Fu-Jen Catholic University, Taiwan.

Two students, Asif Siddiqui and Salman Naim, who have passed MA from the department, will study Advanced Chinese for a year at the top Chinese university (Tsinghua University) on full scholarship from the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

Prof. Azher congratulated these students and said, “While these scholarships reflect the individual students’ hard work and intellectual abilities, they also highlight our university’s commitment to fostering global academic partnerships”.

German Section of Department of Foreign Languages, AMU contributes significantly in Literary Translation Project

The students and teachers of the German Section, Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) contributed significantly to the Translation Project conducted by Goethe-Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai.

The South Asian regional translation project, "Diamantenschliff: The Digital Translation Academy" focused on the translations of German literary works into the South Asian languages with special emphasis on the translation of selected works of Franz Kafka from German into various South Asian languages, including Bangla, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Sinhala, Tamil and Urdu.

Syed Salman Abbas, Assistant Professor, German Language and Literature, Department of Foreign Languages, who was the mentor for Urdu translations, moderated a lecture session on translation delivered by Dr Almuth Degener, a retired professor from the Indology Department, University of Mainz, Germany.

The current and former students of the German Section, including Mohammad Uzair, Mohammad Khalid, Sadique Khan, Mohammad Intizar, Muhammad Fahad and Syeda Alina Ali translated different works of Kafka from German into Urdu, while Mr Syed Salman Abbas contributed to and edited the Urdu translations for the website.

Dr Subair PM, Assistant Professor, made contributions as one of the translators of German texts into Malayalam.

The one-year-long project concluded with the launch of the translations on the official website of Goethe-Institut, https://www.goethe.de/ins/in/en/sta/mum/ap23/dia.html, on July 3, marking Franz Kafka's birthday. The voice recordings of the Urdu translations are also available on the website.

Prof Muhammad Azhar, Dean of the Faculty of International Studies and Chairman of the concerned department appreciated the unique achievement of the students and faculty members of the department and congratulated them for their outreach.

AMU STUDENT OF CHINESE BRIGS LAURELS TO THE UNIVERSITY

Aliya Iqbal Khan, a BA 3rd Year student of Chinese, Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University secured the third prize under the college students’ category in the 23rd Chinese Bridge Competition, 2024, organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, New Delhi.

The organizing committee of the programme at the Embassy has also selected the Chinese Division of the Department of Foreign Languages, AMU, for the “Outstanding Organization Award”.

Prof. Mohammad Azher, Dean, Faculty of International Studies, congratulated Aliya and the Chinese Division on this achievement, and urged other students of the department to participate in such competitions and bring laurels to the university.

SPARC PROJECT ON AI-DRIVEN SPANISH LEARNING INITIATIVES CONCLUDES ON 04.06.2024

The workshop-cum-short term course on “Developing applications for learning Spanish in India using artificial intelligence and digital media” organized by the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University, under the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC), an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, concluded with a valedictory programme.

Addressing the valedictory session as the chief guest, the former officiating Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Gulrez emphasized the significance of integrating modern technologies like artificial intelligence with language education to enhance learning outcomes and broaden educational horizons.

The guest of honour, Prof. Omar Farooq, Director, Research and Development Cell, commended the collaborative spirit and the academic advancement which could be made possible through this international partnership.

The Principal Investigator of the SPARC project, Dr. Mayuresh Kumar, Department of Foreign Languages said that the initiative aimed at enhancing research and academic collaboration with global universities, bringing ranking faculty to India, and this particular project involved Prof. Pablo Gervás and Prof. Carlos León from the Department of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, Complutense University, Madrid, Spain.

He highlighted various activities undertaken by this collaborative initiative and shed light on the significant outcomes.

AMU TEACHER (Dr. Md. Yasin) PRESENTS PAPER IN CHINA

Md Yasin, Assistant Professor of Chinese, Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University presented a paper on “Learning Lessons from Tagore to Improve India-China (Cultural) Relations” at an international conference on “A Hundred-Year Retrospective: Rabindranath Tagore’s Visit and the Unfolding of China-India Cultural Relations” organized by the Peking University, Beijing, China.

He was also felicitated at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where he presented a special lecture on “China in UN Peace Operations: Domestic Debate and Developmental Peace”.

Prof. Nguyen Tang Nghi, Deputy Dean, Faculty of International Relations, welcomed Mr Yasin and appreciated the talk for its content and relevance.

FOUR STUDENTS OF CHINESE PARTICIPATE IN "CHINESE BRIDGE" SPRING CAMP IN CHINA

Four students of Chinese language at the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University, including Azib Khan, Md Firdaus Alam, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Azeem participated in the "Chinese Bridge" Spring Camp, organized by the Yunnan Normal University for Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member nations at Kunming, Urumqi, China.

BILINGUAL MAGAZINE RELEASED

The German Section of the Department of Foreign Languages at Aligarh Muslim University has released; "Die Stimmen" (The Sounds), a bilingual magazine in German and English. Launched on May 2, 2024 the magazine showcases a blend of scholarly articles and creative works, including poetry and short stories contributed by students of the German sections.

The release event was inaugurated by Prof. Mohammad Gulrez , who expressed concerns over declining reading habits among youth due to AI influence and emphasized on the importance of nurturing literary engagement.

Prof. Muhammad Azhar, Chairman of the Department and Dean of the Faculty of International Studies, delivered a warm welcome. Prof. Mohammad Jahangeer Warsi highlighted the significance of fostering creative writing during formative years. Felicitations were also extended by Assistant Professors Mr. Syed Salman Abbas, Ms. Suman Singh, and Dr. Subair PM from the Department of Foreign Languages.

Workshop organized for first-time voters on 23.04.2024

The German Section, Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University, in collaboration with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom South Asia and SMART-NGO's Civic Games Lab organized a workshop for the first-time voters to educate participants regarding various aspects of elections, their rights as voters, and the electoral process.

WORKSHOP HELD UNDER SPARC on 24.04.2024 and 25.04.2024

The Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University is organizing a two-day workshop on April 24-25, 2024 under the project sanctioned to Dr. Mayuresh Kumar as part of the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC).

In which The Guest of honour, are Prof. M.J. Warsi, Chairperson, the Department of Linguistics and President, Linguistic Society of India, discussed the integration of Artificial intelligence with Spanish language teaching and Prof. Omar Farooq,  Coordinator of all the SPARC projects and the Director of Research and Development Cell at AMU, underscored the importance of technology and its applications in didactics. He urged other departments to apply for projects under SPARC, which has received substantial funding.

The resource persons, Prof. Pablo Gervas and Prof. Carlos Leon, Department of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, Complutense University of Madrid, expressed their gratitude and appreciation for AMU for organizing such workshops.

Earlier, welcoming the guests, Dr. Mayuresh Kumar introduced the SPARC project, highlighting how the University will benefit from the expertise of international collaborators.

Dr. Murad Khan discussed the role and achievements of the Department of Foreign Languages.

Prof. Rakshanda Fazli extended a vote of thanks.

STUDENTS OF GERMAN STUDIES BAG PRESTIGIOUS DAAD SCHOLARSHIP

Two MA students 
Mr. Hammad and Md Shad Ali
enrolled in the German Studies Section of the Department of Foreign Languages at Aligarh Muslim University have successfully clinched the esteemed DAAD scholarship, enabling them to participate in summer courses offered in Germany for international students and graduates in 2024 (Hochschulsommerkurse in Deutschland für ausländische Studierende und Graduierte, 2024).

Resource Talk "Nodes of Translation Intellectual History Between Modern India and Germany" on 21.11.2023

The German Section of the Department of Foreign Languages at Aligarh Muslim University hosted a resource talk on November 21, centering on the theme "Nodes of Translation: Intellectual History between modern India and Germany"  Dr. Razak Khan, a Research Fellow at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany, delivered the talk.

DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AMU HOSTS TAIWANESE DELEGATION FOR EDUCATIONAL COLLABORATION 03.02.2024

On February 3, during their visit to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Prof. Li-Wei Chen, Vice President for International Affairs at National Formosa University (NFU), Taiwan, and Mr. Peters Chen, Assistant Representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC), received a warm welcome. In a meeting with Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, the Vice Chancellor of AMU, Prof. Li-Wei Chen and Mr. Peters Chen expressed their gratitude. Prof. Gulrez assured that AMU would work towards fostering collaborative partnerships with Taiwanese universities, aligning with the National Education Policy, and anticipated tangible progress in educational cooperation in the near future.

The delegation was greeted by Prof. Muhammad Azhar, the Dean of the Faculty of International Studies, Prof. Rakshnada F. Fazli of the Department of West Asian Studies and North African Studies, and Md. Yasin, Assistant Professor of Chinese, Department of Foreign Languages.

Mr. Peters Chen from TECC administered the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) for Taiwanese scholarships. Fifteen students from the Department of Foreign Languages, AMU, participated in the test.

In discussions with the Faculty of Management Studies and Research, Prof. Chen outlined opportunities for Indian students at National Formosa University. Prof. Jamal A. Farooquie, Chairman of the Department of Business Administration, expressed interest in joint projects and student exchange programs.

Prof. Chen also engaged with senior faculty and chairpersons of Mechanical Engineering and Electronics Engineering departments. Prof. Mohammad Altamush Siddiqui, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and others expressed interest in collaborative initiatives. The possibility of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding educational cooperation will be explored in the coming days.

Md Yasin, the event organizer, remarked, “This is a first-of-its-kind experience for our Chinese language students since the inception of the department.

An Interactive Session with Mr. Peters Chen The 'Taiwan' opportunity for India on 25.11.2023

Mr. Peters Chen, Assistant Representative & Director, Education Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India (TECC), visited the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University and called on the AMU Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Gulrez. Prof Gulrez welcomed the Taiwanese representative and assured of possible partnerships between AMU and TECC.

In his keynote address at the Department of Foreign Language, Mr Peters Chen appreciated the students’ performance and acknowledged the hospitality at AMU.

He remarked that such interactions would pave the way for further collaboration and partnership between AMU and Taiwan. He encouraged the students to apply for Taiwanese scholarships for the next academic session.

The visit marks a significant milestone as this was the first of its kind by any representative of the TECC, with an aim to establish a valuable connection with the TECC of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and explore avenues for potential educational cooperation and cultural contacts between the two countries.

Earlier, Convenor of the programme Mr. Md Yasin, Assistant Professor of Chinese highlighted how Taiwan has become an essential destination for Indian nationals to foster trade links, educational cooperation and cultural exchanges.

In his welcome address, Prof. Muhammad Azhar, Dean of the Faculty of International Studies, drew attention to the need for such initiatives and cooperation and elaborated on further collaboration and cultural contacts.

Prof. Jawaid Iqbal, the former dean of the Faculty of International Studies underscored the opportunity Taiwan offers to Indian nationals.

Prof. Rakshanda Fazli underlined the scope for cooperation in joint research, internships and exchange programmes.

Aazib Khan, a Chinese language student, sang a Chinese song, while another student of M.A. 1st year, Anas Ali delivered a speech in Chinese.

Aliya Khan, a BA final year student, proposed a vote of thanks.

The programme was conducted by Chinese language students Nazneen Haider Khan and Arshi Mirza.

WORKSHOP AND ONSET DAAD SCHOLARSHIP HELD ON 25.10.2023

The Aligarh Muslim University's Department of Foreign Languages organized a Language Workshop on October 25 to promote German-Indian academic ties. The event commenced with a thought-provoking Resource Talk on the theme, "What should we read?” The question of canon in Indian German studies."

The highlight of the day was the onSet (Deutsch) DAAD scholarship test, which offers successful candidates the opportunity to pursue summer courses in Germany on a scholarship. Professor Mohammad Gulrez, the Vice-Chancellor of AMU, inaugurated the session and emphasized the significance of fostering strong German-Indian relationships.

Dr. Jan Helge Weidemann, a DAAD Lecturer from the University of Bremen, Germany, explored potential collaborations between AMU and the German Academic Exchange Service.

Professor Muhammad Azhar, Chairman of the Department and Dean of the Faculty of International Studies, shared valuable insights from German history in his welcome address.

Guests, including Professor Jawaid Iqbal, Professor Rakhshanda Fazli, and Mr. Syed Salman Abbas, delivered felicitations, acknowledging the importance of such initiatives.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shiv Prakash Yadav, emphasizing the role of language and academic exchanges in strengthening global relationships.

This workshop and scholarship test stand as significant milestones in promoting German language and culture in India.


FACULTY INVITED TO ATTEND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN RUSSIA

Dr. Mayuresh Kumar, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University,  is invited to attended the 6th International Conference on "The Magic of Innovation: Outlook for Linguistics and Language Teaching in the Present Context." Hosted by the English Language Department of the School of International Relations at Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), Russia, on October 20 and 21

The conference has established itself as a preeminent platform where linguists, language educators, and researchers from across the globe gather. Dr. Kumar wil actively engage in the conference's proceedings.

MGIMO, overseen by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is renowned for its comprehensive language curriculum.

13 CHINESE LANGUAGE STUDENTS OF AMU GET JOB OFFER FROM AN MNC

Thirteen students of the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University, including ten undergraduate and 3 postgraduate final year students have been selected by a reputed MNC, Sutherland.

AMU FACULTY MEMBER (Dr. MAYURESH KUMAR) PLAYS A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN G20 EVENTS

Dr Mayuresh Kumar, Department of Foreign Language, Aligarh Muslim University played a significant role as a Spanish language interpreter during the G-20 summit and meaningfully contributed to bridging linguistic barriers and fostering productive dialogues between the Prime Minister of India and other dignitaries from Spain and Argentina.

Dr Kumar's expertise in languages proved invaluable during high-stakes diplomatic interactions, ensuring smooth and effective communication.

In addition to his commendable work at the G20 events, Dr Mayuresh Kumar further showcased his expertise by providing interpretational services during the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20 Summit) from October 13-14 and appearing on Sansad TV during an insightful interview with the Speaker of the lower house of Spain.

Dr Kumar also had the privilege of visiting the new Indian Parliament, a symbol of the nation's democratic heritage.

Prof. Muhammad Azhar, Dean, Faculty of International Studies, congratulated Dr. Kumar on the commendable achievement, which adds to the pride of the university.

AMU TEACHER (Dr. SUHAIL AKHTAR) GETS INTERNATIONAL PUSHKIN COMPETITION ACCOLADE

Dr. Suhail Akhtar, Assistant Professor (Russian), Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University has been honoured with the XXIII International Pushkin Competition accolade, which is a joint initiative of the Department of Foreign Economics and International Relations of Moscow, Russia, and the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Rossiskaya Gazeta."

The award is given to those who have made significant strides in Russian academic studies, showcasing their dedication and passion for the promotion of the language and culture.

Dr. Akhtar’s efforts in advancing the Russian language, particularly in India, have earned him this significant accolade.

He was given the award at a function organized by the State Autonomous Institution of Moscow, the "Center for Humanitarian and Business Cooperation with Compatriots Abroad - Moscow House of Compatriot".

डोमिनिकन गणराज्य के राजदूत ने एएमयू का दौरा किया

डोमिनिकन गणराज्य के राजदूत, हिज ऐक्सीलेंसी श्री डैविड पुइग ने अलीगढ़ मुस्लिम विश्वविद्यालय के सहयोग और सांस्कृतिक और शैक्षिक समझौतों के माध्यम से भारत-डोमिनिकन गणराज्य संबंधों को और सुदृढ़ करने के लिए विश्वविद्यालय के विदेशी भाषा विभाग का दौरा किया।

अपने दौरे में उन्होंने भारत और डोमिनिकन गणराज्य के बीच शैक्षिक, द्विपक्षीय राजनीतिक, आर्थिक, सहयोग और सांस्कृतिक एजेंडा के विकास और सांस्कृतिक संबंधों को और मजबूत करने के तरीकों पर बात की।

उन्होंने एएमयू के छात्रों से सांस्कृतिक कूटनीति के केंद्र में रहने और अंर्तसांस्कृतिक  संवाद स्थापित करने के लिए सकारात्मक गतिविधियों में शामिल होने का आग्रह किया।

श्री पुइग ने सांस्कृतिक समावेश और शिक्षा के माध्यम से संबंधों को विकसित करने और बनाए रखने की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया।

स्वागत भाषण में, प्रोफेसर जावेद इक़बाल (डीन, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अध्ययन संकाय और अध्यक्ष, विदेशी भाषा विभाग) ने डोमिनिकन गणराज्य के राजदूत को विदेशी भाषा विभाग के कामकाज से अवगत कराया और डोमिनिकन गणराज्य के संस्थानों के साथ सहयोग की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया। उन्होंने डोमिनिकन राजदूत को एक स्मृति चिन्ह भी भेंट किया।

प्रोफेसर मोहम्मद रिजवान खान (अध्यक्ष, अंग्रेजी विभाग) ने भारत और लैटिन अमेरिकी देशों के बीच की खाई को पाटने के लिए भारतीय शैक्षणिक संस्थानों में स्पेनिश भाषा सिखाने की आवश्यकता पर चर्चा की।

प्रोफेसर एम शाहुल हमीद (हिंदी विभाग) ने डोमिनिकन गणराज्य साहित्य के हिंदी और अन्य भारतीय भाषाओं में अनुवाद के बारे में बात की।

प्रोफेसर रख्शंदा एफ फाजली, डा. सावन कुमार सिंह और डा. फाजिला शाहनवाज ने दोनों देशों के शैक्षणिक संस्थानों के बीच संबंधों को मजबूत करने और अनुसंधान में सहयोग को आगे बढ़ाने पर बात की।

स्पैनिश भाषा के सहायक प्रोफेसर डा मुराद अहमद खान ने कार्यक्रम का संचालन किया और कार्यक्रम के आयोजन में मुख्य भूमिका निभाई। डा. सुहैल अख्तर ने धन्यवाद ज्ञापित किया।
