In Aligarh Muslim University, Fine Art as a subject of study was first introduced at Women's College in 1954. Soon after, the under-graduate programme was offered in 1956 however, the Master Degree in Fine Arts started in 1984. initially the courses were offered to women candidates only under the academic guidance of Prof. Azmat Shah, a renowned artist of India who had accomplished his studies from Lucknow College of Arts.
Fine Arts as full-fledged department was established in 1988 in the Faculty of Arts. The department introduced two professional courses, Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 1993 and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in1998. The research Degrees, M. Phil and Ph.D. were started in the department from 1993. At present, we offer B.V.A. & M.V.A. in Painting and Ph.D.
The teaching program in the department is focused on quality results in both creative painting and research. Periodic updating of syllabi in accordance with the relevance and advancement of knowledge of the subjects taught in the department is done on regular basis.
In India, the opportunities in the field of creative art and culture have witnessed multifold increase. Today, an art student seeks excellence in creative vision as well as perfection in the skills. To provide better access to its learners, the department is in the process of introducing post graduate specialized courses MVA in Applied Arts and MVA in Art History. These courses will improve the quality of Ph.D. research in the area of Ancient, Medieval, Contemporary and Traditional art of India & the world as well as will improve our students as professional artists.
A society or a nation can not be imagined without its art and culture. To understand a civilisation one needs to study the Visual arts and artefacts produced by its artists through the ages. Art practices through the times have crossed many levels to reach in to a new environment, which is full of innovation, experiments and interventions of different disciplines. Today education in art for any Institution is equally important as science or any other area of studies or discipline.
The education of art in an institution of national importance, like AMU, definitely enriches the learner in a multidimensional ways, therefore, a multidimensional approach towards art is aimed in our department.
The faculty members of the department have proved their caliber in both research & the creative arts by their publications and participations in national and international seminars, conferences and workshops, solo and collective shows throughout the country as well as at UK, USA, Germany and Egypt.
The students of the Department are making their presence felt in the field of art at state and national levels through achieving awards, scholarships, active participation in workshops, group and solo shows and participations in Kochi Binnale and Youth Festivals. The faculty members have been taking utmost care to groom their students more effectively by establishing close student - teacher contact.
Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery
The prestigious Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery of Aligarh Muslim University is a privileged option for the students and Teachers of Department of Visual Arts to organise and participate in exhibitions, workshops, residencies and variety of collaborative programmes since 17th October 2013 after its inaugurated by Dr. Aziz Quraishi, Hon'ble Governor of Uttarakhand on the eve of Sir Syed Day.
Apart from developing a permanent collection the management of the gallery is committed for regular events and programmes specially designed for the benefits of the emerging artists and students of Aligarh Muslim University and visiting artists. For the holistic development of the gallery and the art in this region several comprehensive plans and programmes of national and international levels such as Group and Solo Shows, artist workshops, residencies, lectures and demonstrations of invited artists and various interactive programmes in collaborations are being organised on regular basis.
Gandhi Jayanti Art Competition
The Department of Fine Arts organized an art competition on October 1, 2024, commemorating Gandhi Jayanti. The event, themed "Bapu's Vision in Colors," saw enthusiastic participation from approximately 50 students who artistically interpreted Mahatma Gandhi's principles and vision. Students employed various artistic mediums to translate Gandhian philosophy into visual expressions. Their artwork reflected themes of peace, non-violence, self-reliance, and social harmony - core principles of Gandhi's teachings.
National Space Day Poster Competition
The Department of Fine Arts, Aligarh Muslim University, organized a poster competition on August 17, 2024, to commemorate National Space Day and celebrate the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The event, themed "ISRO's Achievements and Future" Students created artworks depicting India's space achievements and ISRO's future aspirations, with special emphasis on the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The event not only showcased the artistic talents of participants but also helped raise awareness about India's space program achievements. The competition effectively combined artistic expression with scientific appreciation, making it both a creative and educational endeavor.
Women's Day Art Competition
The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in collaboration with the Department of Fine Arts, Aligarh Muslim University, organized a Poster Making and Slogan Writing Competition to commemorate International Women's Day on March 9, 2024. The event was held at the Fine Arts Department lawn. Students participated enthusiastically in the competition, creating powerful visual messages and impactful slogans celebrating women's empowerment and gender equality. The outdoor venue provided an inspiring environment for participants to express their creativity and perspective on women's rights and achievements. The competition successfully combined artistic expression with social awareness, encouraging dialogue about women's issues through creative mediums. Selected entries will be displayed on campus to continue spreading awareness about women's empowerment and gender equality.
National Workshop on "Representation of Society in Art"
The Department of Fine Arts organized a two-day national workshop on "Representation of Society in Art" on March 6-7, 2024. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, Vice Chancellor, AMU as Chief Guest, along with Prof. Naima Khatoon, Principal of Women's College, Prof. Arif Nazir, Dean Faculty of Arts, and Mr. Mohammad Imran IPS, Registrar AMU, as Guests of Honor. The workshop featured Dr. Pradosh Kumar Mishra, Professor, Department of History of Art, BHU, who delivered an insightful lecture on "Pragmatic Aspects of Art Today." Mr. Sanjay Mishra, Visual Artist from Lucknow, conducted practical sessions on acrylic painting techniques, creative applications of forms and colors, and style development. The event provided participants with valuable theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in contemporary art practices.
The Third Edition of the Annual Art Exhibition by the Department of Fine Arts was inaugurated on February 23, 2024, at Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery, AMU. Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, Vice Chancellor of AMU, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Prof. Naima Khatoon, Principal of Women's College, inaugurated the exhibition. Prof. Arif Nazir, Dean Faculty of Arts, and Mr. Mohammad Imran IPS, Registrar AMU, attended as Guests of Honor. The exhibition showcases over 150 artworks created by BVA and MVA students and research scholars. A comprehensive exhibition catalogue featuring the works of all exhibitors was released during the inaugural ceremony. The six-day exhibition, displaying diverse artistic talents of the department, will remain open until February 27, 2024. The event marks a significant milestone in promoting young artistic talent and celebrating the creative achievements of the Fine Arts Department at AMU.
To commemorate Gandhi Jayanti, The Department of Fine Arts organized an on-the-spot poster making competition on October 5, 2023, . Around 50 students participated in the event, creating posters based on quotes of Mahatma Gandhi. The competition was successfully coordinated by organizing committee. Students demonstrated exceptional creativity in visualizing Gandhi's messages through various artistic mediums. The two-hour competition saw participants using diverse techniques to interpret famous Gandhian quotes. The event effectively combined artistic expression with an appreciation of Gandhian philosophy, making it both a creative and educational endeavor.
Aligarh, August 17: The Center of Advanced Research in Electrified Transportation (CARET) building in the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) became a sight for creativity as 'On the Spot Painting Competition" of Innovation Council and the University Incubation Centre (IC&UIC) was held here. Student artists were invited to make intricate mural pieces exploring ‘Innovation in India during the past 75 years’ in the IC&UIC contest held in collaboration with the Department of Fine Arts and CARET to observe the Nation-wide ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
