PROF. SAIRA MEHNAZ AWARDED FELLOWSHIP BY INDIAN ASSOCIATION OF PREVENTIVE AND SOCIAL MEDICINE



At the National Conference of IAPSM, which took place in Mangalore, Karnataka, on February 8, 2024, Prof. Saira Mehnaz received the Fellowship of the Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine (FIAPSM) as an honor at the event, which was organized by Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. A prestigious organization, the Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine (IAPSM), honors those who have made outstanding achievements to the disciplines of social and preventive medicine. The fellowship, given to deserving experts, is a testament to their dedication to and influence on the advancement of these essential healthcare fields.  The noteworthy achievements Prof. Mehnaz has made to the field of social and preventive medicine are highlighted by this esteemed distinction.

At JNMC, AMU, Aligarh, Prof. Saira Mehnaz is currently the Chairperson of the Department of Community Medicine. Prof. Mehnaz has a successful career in community health and preventive medicine. She has served her field with distinction and shown excellent leadership, scholarship, and service. Professor Saira Mehnaz was presented with the Fellowship by Dr. Purushottam Giri, a distinguished community medicine expert and Secretary General of IAPSM, Dr. A. M. Kadri, President IAPSM and other officer bearers were present at the event. At inaugural event, a prominent group of academicians, researchers, healthcare professionals, and residents eager to take part in the annual National IAPSM Conference were present. The Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine Fellowship awarded to Prof. Saira Mehnaz is evidence of her exceptional accomplishments and commitment to improving healthcare practices. Her honor at the National IAPSM Conference's inaugural event highlights the value of ongoing work in social and preventive medicine to improve public health.

AMU DOCTORS’ TEAM PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AT KUALA LUMPUR

The 9th International Conference on Public Health 2023 (ICOPH 2023) organized by The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) on “Preparedness in Public Health: Advancing Technology, Equity and Strengthening Community” held on 03rd -04th August 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Hybrid Platform, for which, Department of Community Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was one of the academic partners. It provided the opportunity to unite diverse researches and case studies from all over the world, in parallel sessions. The conference had more than 200 participants from over 40 countries, in which there were 22 participants were from the Department of Community Medicine, including faculty, Junior & Senior residents along with Prof. Saira Mehnaz, Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine.

Plenary speech on the topic “Empowering Communities for Health Equity: The Transformative Role of Community Medicine in Public Health” was given by Prof. Saira Mehnaz. During which she mentioned the importance of Health Equity in public health to empower the community and that it can be seen through several perspectives of social cohesion, population health, ethical responsibility, economic benefits and social justice.

Dr. Tabassum Nawab (Assistant Professor), Dr. Sameena Ahmad (Assistant Professor), Dr. Yasir Zubair, Dr. Shivangi, Dr. Karthika P., (Senior resident),  Dr. Iram Abid (junior resident),  Dr. Hira Alam (junior resident) Dr. Danish Kamal (Junior resident) , Dr. Harapriya Natarajan (Junior resident), Dr. Jhilmil Agrawal (Junior resident) made oral presentations.

Prof. Saira Mehnaz was recognized for her planery speech, while Dr. Tabassum Nawab was awarded with best presentation of session under the theme of maternal health and best overall presentation in physical mode. Dr. Danish Kamal was awarded with best presentation of the session under the theme of adolescent and young adult health, while Dr. Jhilmil Agrawal was given the best presentation award for the session under the theme of health research. Under the virtual category, Dr. Safia Habib, department of Biochemistry, J.N, Medical college was awarded with overall best presentation.

Prof. Saira Mehnaz was a member of Evaluation Panel and also evaluated several conference sessions while Dr. Tabassum Nawab and Dr. Sameena Ahmad chaired a few sessions.

The conference highlighted the significance of preventive measures, healthcare improvement, and equitable access to medical resources. The conference participants had a great learning opportunity through interaction with their international counterparts which will help in their future research opportunities.

Dr. Nafis Faizi, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, participated in a dialogue meeting on “The global need for effective antibiotics-unlocking barriers for collective action” at Uppsala University, Sweden. The Uppsala dialogue was jointly organised by Uppsala University & ReAct- Action against Antibiotic Resistance.

XXI Annual Conference Of IAPSM UP & UK State Chapter (26th – 27th October 2018)

The Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, is organising the XXI ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF IAPSM UP & UK CHAPTER – 2018 – from 26th -27th October 2018.


Department of Community Medicine won the second prize for the activities carried out during World Breastfeeding Week-2017 celebrations which were held at urban and rural health training centers of the Department. The award was given at Annual 20th Conference of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine- UP & UK Chapter (IAPSMUPUKCON 2017) held at University of Medical Sciences, Saifai, Etawah. In the event, 13 medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand participated. Award was given by Brigadier T. Prabhakar Rao, Vice Chancellor of the University. Prof. Ali Amir Organizing Chairman of the event congratulated the whole team who participated in the activities especially Dr. Saira Mehnaz, Coordinator of the event. The team included Prof. M. Athar Ansari, Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi, Dr. Salman Shah, Dr. Suboohi Afzal, Dr. Tabassum Nawab, Dr. Nafis Faizi, Dr. Urfi, Dr. Sakeena Mushfiq and all Senior and Junior residents and Medico- Social Wokers.

J.N.Medical College also won the bid to host the next year State Annual Conference at A.M.U., Aligarh. The last conference of IAPSMUPUKCON was held at A.M.U. Aligarh in1994.

Prof. Ali Amir, Prof. M. Athar Ansari, and Dr. Saira Mehnaz chaired the scientific sessions. Dr. Saira Menaz and Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi (Executive Member of the Association) also presented the scientific papers. Dr. Samreen, Dr. Nikhat, Dr. Ambreen and Dr. Shaigan also presented research papers.
