I received my Ph. D., M. Phil., M. Sc., and B. Sc. degrees from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and have been working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology, Women’s College, AMU. Teaching is my passion and I believe that it is my duty to help my students learn the various concepts within the field of zoology as they graduate to pursue higher education and rewarding careers. Presently, I am teaching undergraduate courses including Animal Diversity II, Public Health and Hygiene, Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates, Biotechniques, Applied Zoology, and Poultry Farming. As a scientist and ichthyologist, I take great pride in my research which focuses on studying the physiology of osmoregulation in fish. I use my expertise as a zoologist to find connections with other fields for an interdisciplinary approach to my research and teaching. Hence, I enjoy working and collaborating in the areas of zoology, nutrition, cancer, and leadership. My work has been published in various journals of national and international repute and been cited by other scientists in the field. I have been invited to present my research and share my findings at various conferences and meetings.
Throughout my career, I
have been the recipient of various competitive grants, fellowships, and awards.
As a young scientist at the start of my
career, I was awarded a competitive and independent research grant worth Rs.
20,00,000 (20 lacs) by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) as part
of the Women Scientist Programme under the Women Scientist Scheme of the
Government of India. This award with the large sanctioned amount was the first
of its kind at that time at Aligarh Muslim University for a woman scientist and
put me on a strong footing. It allowed me to conduct research on the proposed topic
at the Department of Zoology, AMU with the financial support and sponsorship from
DST. I have been the recipient of Senior
Research Fellowship from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research
(CSIR), New Delhi and the Post-Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) from the University
Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi. As a PhD scholar, I earned the Junior
and Senior Research Fellowships, which are University Fellowships, sponsored by
the UGC. While conducting research as the Principal Investigator (PI) and Scientist
under the DST scheme and as a CSIR Research Associate (RA) at the Department of
Zoology, AMU, I earned the invaluable post-doctoral research experience of eight
years. This experience has provided me the tools to investigate the research
hypotheses, questions, and topics from a scientific and humanistic perspective,
always keeping the interdisciplinary and applied approaches at the centre of my
research philosophy.
