  3. "ELT Pedagogical Platforms used by Engineering Students in Bangladesh : A Survey-Based Study of the Issues and Challenges during and beyond Covid -19 Pandemic"

    Co-authored with:
Published in DUET Journal, Bangladesh. The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic with its pervasive presence across the globe has justified the emergence of virtual teaching-learning platforms. Hence, the mode of teaching-learning paradigm has unprecedentedly transformed from the traditional classroom to an online one. Bangladeshi engineering institutions have also embraced this new-normal teaching methodology in English as Second/Foreign Language (ES/FL) contexts where innumerable obstacles like choosing appropriate online teaching methodology, contents, resources, assessment procedures, etc. have been encountered. Therefore, this research intends to identify the issues and challenges based on mental, material, skill, infrastructural, and assessment-related difficulties confronted by the undergraduate engineering students of a public university in Bangladesh. It also takes stock of the learners' attitudes towards learning English online. Quantitative data from 175 students through online questionnaires and qualitative data from 9 in-service teachers through online interviews have been obtained for this study. Then, the data were analyzed into descriptive statistics and frequencies using MS Excel and SPSS. The study's findings reveal that students and teachers encounter several difficulties in ensuing this new virtual pedagogic paradigm. Besides, the teachers remain in a great dilemma in assessing the students' English language proficiency, as there remains no single reliable online assessment scheme available. Finally, some technological tools are also proposed for t?h?e?

  5. Teaching Kanthapura: My Pedagogical Journey from Postcolonial to Post-Truth Paradigms

    http://dx.doi.org/10.24834/educare.2024.1.1092

In this article, I share my experience in teaching the novel Kanthapura to undergraduate students at an Indian university over the past two decades. I discuss the evolving interpretations of the novel in the context of changing pedagogical culture and intellectual undercurrents, namely postcolonial and post-truth discourses. I reflect on the teaching strategies and techniques that I have used to engage students against the backdrop of culturally responsive pedagogy. The article comprises an empirical study of students’ responses to the novel collected by me over the last ten years.

  6. Trolling as a Disruptive Tool for Human Rights Violations: An Exploration of the Challenges Faced by Performance Artists

The proliferation of online platforms and digital tools has introduced both opportunities and challenges for individuals, particularly within the realm of social media. While platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc. have served as avenues for cultural, social, economic, educational, state-run, and political discourse, they have also facilitated the emergence of paranoiac phenomena, such as trolling. This paper delves into the portrayal of trolling as a disruptive technological tool and cultural phenomenon in Bangladesh, specifically targeting TV actors, theatre performers, and local rural artists. The study highlights the pervasive use of trolling as a means to harass, criticize, and intimidate artists online. It reveals how trolling not only violates the human rights of these artists but also undermines their creativity, credibility, and sense of belonging within society. For methodological justification, it has employed a mixed-method research approach incorporating questionnaire surveys administered to 38 participants, interviews with two aspiring artists, three theatre artists, and three students studying theatre and performance studies, and analysis of social media comments. The paper unravelled that trolling is used exclusively as an online harassment tool to embarrass performance artists in Bangladesh. It underscores the detrimental impact of trolling, leading to psychological distress, depression, and alienation among targeted artists. In response to these challenges, the paper offers recommendations aimed at empowering artists to confront and combat online harassment, thereby safeguarding their well-being and fostering a more supportive digital environment conducive to artistic expression and innovation.

  7. NATION AND THE VERNACULAR: A CASE OF URDU IN PARTITIONED INDIA in Aligarh Journal of Linguistics

This paper explores the colonial imposition of nationhood, focusing on the linguistic and cultural ramifications for the Urdu language in partitioned India. Delving into Urdu's evolution, this study examines its politicization and marginalization post-Partition, juxtaposing its resilience against the homogenizing tendencies of nationalism and globalization. The discussion foregrounds Urdu's unique status as a nation-less language, its rich literary tradition, and its role in challenging monolithic national and global paradigms, advocating for an inclusive approach to world literature that transcends colonial and nationalistic constraints.

  2. Theatre for Teacher Education to Prepare Teachers in an Inclusive Classroom: A Historical Perspective of India and Southeast Asia

Education should be about transformation, whether for teachers or learners: transformation in conceptual understanding and the methods of completion of tasks. It is true that enormous and widely dispersed influences from regions outside of Southeast Asia—from China, India, the West, and Islamic nations—have left their marks on the region's theatre. It's also true that theatre from one nation in Southeast Asia has frequently influenced theatre from nearby nations. But it is also true that throughout the various countries of Southeast Asia, theatre has grown in different directions in response to local conditions and influences. In this evolutionary process, several diverse theatre styles have come into being. In Indonesia and Thailand, two nations with highly established theatre industries, there are over a dozen different theatre genres. With the passage of time, there have been major changes in the field of second language teaching; among the more recent promising and productive ones is task-based language teaching. In ESL classrooms, funds and resources are always an issue and often, the stakeholders are concerned about the paucity of resources in ESL contexts. Theatre is an absolutely cost-effective resource useful for task-based pedagogy. This paper focuses on probing how theatre can be a useful tool for teacher education to prepare teachers in an inclusive classroom from the perspective of India and Southeast Asia. This paper aims to link how Indian Theatre arts can influence the teaching and learning of the English language in Southeast Asian nations. This paper further identifies conceptual and theoretical frameworks from the fields of theatre and teacher education for an inclusive classroom. Additionally, it tries to find the links between teacher education and theatre, which might benefit ESL/EFL learning in the classroom by using theatrical techniques. Therefore, the paper aims to propose how teacher training can be enriched with theatre as a resource.
