Department of Neuro Surgery
Neuro Surgery
Evolution of Neurosurgery in J. N. Medical College
The seed of the Neurosurgery was sowed
by the then head of the Department of Surgery Prof. Nasim Ansari. He convinced
Dr. Naerendra Kumar to establish the
neurosurgery unit after he joined in 1968. This was the pre CT scan era and
management of trauma and tumors of the brain was the herculean task. In the
same year of 1968 the UGC standing committee headed by Prof. P. N. Tandon
sanctioned the posts of professor and reader to establish the neurosurgery specialty
in our institute. After twenty years, Dr. Mazhar Hussain and Dr. Prem Chandra
joined the unit in the year 1986 -87 and stayed for a year only. The
"Golden Era" of neurosurgical speciality started when Prof V. K.
Srivastava joined the department on 20th January 1988. This was the beginning
of a new 'Dawn' in world of neurosurgical specialty at our place. He joined the
department after completing his M.Ch. from NIMHANS . He has all the qualities
of a good surgical teacher. His perseverance, patience and persistence at last
paid and he became the founder Chairman
of the newly created Department of Neurosurgery on 30th Oct 2012 after a long wait of 24 years. The sustained
effort of Prof. M. A. Khan and Dr. M. F. Huda cannot be ignored. Thanks to the
present Vice - Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameeruddin Shah for his vision and special
interest in the creation of the neurosurgery department. The neurosurgery
specialty got further strength when Dr. M. F. Huda M.Ch. (B.H.U.) joined this
specialty in 1998. How to steer the boat in difficult times one can learn from
Dr. M. F. Huda. He is the surgeon with strength and a worker with wisdom. A
down to earth person put all his efforts to bring this specialty to the present
shape. Joining of Dr. R. M. Sharma, M.Ch (Neurosurgery) from NIMHANS, in 2013
as assistant professor is new feather in the cap of department of neurosurgery.
Presently Dr. Sharma is being promoted as Professor Neurosurgery. Things have
started moving fast. In the able guidance of Prof. M.F. Huda the department is
gradually making progress. Now there are four Faculty with
Dr. Tabish Khan (M.Ch Neurosurgery from
BHU, Varanasi) a young and dynamic Neurosurgeon joining the Department in
2018 as Assistant Professor. Dr. M. Ahmed Ansari (M.Ch Neurosurgery, SMS Medical
College, Jaipur) joined as Assistant Professor in 2021. Dr. Maneesh Kumar
Bhardwaj (M.Ch from Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana) joined
us as Senior Resident in Neurosurgery in 2020. The Department has its two
separate Neurosurgery Operation theatre now. Number of operation days have also
increased from three to five days a week. We also have acquired state of the
art equipment like Neuroendoscope, Pentero Microscope, CUSA, and Sterotaxy
instruments. It has increased our horizons to start Neuroendoscopy, Sterotactic
surgery and other Skull base and Microscopic Neurosurgery. Recently
Neuroendovascular procedures are also being done in collaboration with
Cardiology department. With increase in the facilities and operative days the
workload of the department have also increased. Now more than 500 elective
Neurosurgeries and 300 emergency Neurosurgery are being done annually. During
the Covid -19 Pandemic the Department has done excellent work by proving the
emergency Neurosurgical care. Later on, Telemedicine was started, and more than
250 cases were operated. Beside it Department also provide OPD services,
Emergency Care for spinal and Head trauma, social outreach and awareness.
We have begun pursuing research on immunotherapy of gliomas in collaboration with biotechnology. It is at a preliminary stage, but the aim is to produce Glioma vaccines one day. We are also planning to hold national Symposium/Conference on Immunotherapy of Gliomas which would be first of its kind in the country.
We have been given letter of permission to start M.Ch Neurosurgery (02 Seats) from this Session 2021-22.
The Department is gearing up to give the best environment and the academic exposure to its students.
