Constitution Day Celebrated in the Faculty of Law
Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh

The Faculty of Law organized75thConstitution Day by unveiling the true copy of the original Constitution of India prepared by Ministry of Culture, Government of India, New Delhi, as part of ‘Constitution Day Celebration 2023’. Prof. MZM Nomani, Dean, Faculty of Law, in his welcome address ‘encompassed historical anecdotes from the Government of India Act, 1935 to the Constitution of India, 1950 alongside the doctrinal refinement of basic structure doctrine and pro-bono-publico constitutionalism.’ He further highlighted the egalitarian values of the Constitution and its supplementary addition by Constitutional morality and transformative constitutionalism.’

Mr. Sanjiv Kumar Singh, Additional District Judge, Aligarh addressed about the importance of fundamental rights and duties on the Constitution Day. Prof. Nishat Fatima, University Librarian, Maulana Azad Library, Aligarh Muslim University, emphasized the role of libraries to provide constitutional literacy among the masses.

Ms. Aliya Sarfaraz Khan student of Vthsemester B.A.LL.B. located the feminist dimension of India’s constitution-making by underlining the relevance of 15 women members of the constituent assembly.

Mr. Arham Khan student of Final year B.A.LL.B. elucidated the images portrayed in each chapter of the original constitution and explained the historical relevance of the original constitution designed by Nand Lal Bose.

Ms. Fida Fathima K.K student of B.A.LL.BVth Semester stressed the need for the translation of the Indian Constitution into vernacular languages as she translated many judgments of constitutional importance into Malayalam language.

Mr. Javed Alam student of B.A.LL.B Vth Semester traced the constitutional development since the pronouncement of Keshava Nanda Baharti Case on its completion of its 50 years.

Prof. Mohd. Ashraf, Chairman, Department of Law, Aligarh Muslim University proposed the Vote of thanks.

The true copy of the Constitution was unveiled jointly by Prof. MZM Nomani, Dean, Faculty of Law; Mr. Sanjiv Kumar Singh Additional District Judge, Aligarh and Prof. Nishat Fatima, UniversityLibrarian,MaulanaAzadLibrary,AligarhMuslimUniversityanddedicatedtothe  Seminar Library, faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University. The Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University organized an International Webinar on 'Contemporary trends in International Space Law' on 21 October 2023.

Prof. M.Z.M. Nomani, Dean Faculty of Law, delivered the introductory address where he went into detail on the intersection between International Law and Outer Space Law. He further emphasized the need for more research into the field of International Space policies with the advent of the commercialization of space tourism and the positive and leadership role of developing nations especially, India.


The keynote speaker of the webinar, Prof. (Dr.) Sandeepa Bhat B., who is the Director of Aviation and Space Laws at the National University of Juridical Sciences. Prof. Bhat discussed the challenges in space tourism, IPR in space, and military interventions in space-related activities. Prof. Bhat talked about the demarcation line (i.e., the Karman line) and its importance along with the line that needs to be drawn between Space Law and Aviation Law. Furthermore, he also brought attention to the challenges in space tourism insurance.


The next speaker for the Webinar was Prof. Christopher D. Johnson who is the adjunct faculty at Georgetown University, United States of America. He took over as the guest speaker and delivered his lecture which included a closer scrutiny of the existing international space treaties. He discussed the problems that arise from the personal or private ownership of space resources retrieved from space and lunar missions.


The speakers also entertained questions from both the online participants and the audience at the offline location and graced the gathering with their profound knowledge of the subject.


The two-hour-long International Webinar also included a knowledgeable and intellectual exchange between the distinguished speakers Prof. Bhat and Prof. Johnson where they discussed the intricacies of space law, its challenges, and the probable solutions as per the National and International policies.


Dr Shahab Shabbir, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, and the program coordinator proposed the Vote of Thanks where he extended his gratitude to the Dean, the speakers of India and abroad, and the audience. He loudly applauded the contribution of the student Coordinators of the event, viz Khadija, Arman, Sanu, Arham, Rushan, Noorain, and the team for making the webinar a huge success.

Faculty of Law, AMU organized Lecture on ‘Human Rights in a Democratic Society’ 16 October 2023

The Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University organised a lecture by Mr. Matthew Gold (Director and Joint Head of Civil Actions against Public Authority at Gold Jennings Solicitors, London, United Kingdom) on the theme ‘Human Rights in a Democratic Society’ to commemorate the UN Day on 16 October 2023.

In his welcome address the Dean, Faculty of Law, Professor Md Zafar Mahfooz Nomani gave an overview of the legal and constitutional framework of Human Rights in India. “As we celebrate our Founder’s Day tomorrow, it is befitting that Mr. Matthew who works for the upliftment of the “have nots”. Mr Matthew’s commitment for the cause of under-represented resonates with the of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan,” he added.

Introducing Mr Matthew, Dr Mohammad Nasir, Assistant Professor and coordinator of the programme gave a brief sketch of his profile and achievements. “Matthew established his law firm in 2002 with the distinct remit and objective to fight injustice and to hold public authorities to account for wrongdoing and misconduct,” he said.

Mr. Matthew Gold in his lecture reflected on a series of cases where he has represented the victims. He explained the expanding dimensions of human rights, its ever-changing contours, working of European Courts of Human Rights, the EU’s position and interpretation of Human Rights. Mr Matthew also dwelled on the interplay of the right to privacy of a family viz a viz human rights of a dead body. Discussing the mental health implications of working as a human rights lawyer, he asked the young minds to take imbibe professionalism in their pursuits to be able to function empathetically yet effectively.

Prof. Shakeel Ahmad, Department of Law, AMU moderated the question answer session while Prof. Hashmat Ali Khan gave the concluding remarks. The Chairman, Department of Law, Prof. Mohd Ashraf delivered the vote of thanks.

The lecture was broadcast online on the off-campus centres of AMU – Murshidabad and Malappuram.

Public Virtual Lecture on “Debating Constitutional Change” organized by Faculty of Law, A.M.U. on 09.09.2023

The lecture  delivered by Advocate Ashish Goel, a law graduate from West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) and LLM from King’s College, London. He is an expert in international taxation and constitutional law. He has been involved in several landmark cases before the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts. He has also authored several books and articles on various aspects of constitutional law and taxation.


The lecture also addressed by Prof. M.Z.M. Nomani, Dean, Faculty of Law, AMU. He is a renowned scholar and academician in the field of law, with specialisation in IPR and environmental law. He has published several books and papers on these topics.

The Faculty of Law, in collaboration with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hall, Aligarh Muslim University, organized a webinar on "Cyber Law, International Standards and Its Compliance". A large number of participants, out of more than 580 delegates who registered for participation from all over the country, joined online deliberations on the complexities of cyberspace law, its enforcement and implementation. 

Prof. M.Z.M. Nomani, Dean, Faculty of Law welcomed the guests and highlighted the significant features of the topic and the need for organizing the webinar. He cautioned about the possible dangers to humanity in the midst of cyber insecurity, privacy breaches and data sharing issues.

Prof. Hashmat Ali Khan, Provost, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hall, dwelled on the practical difficulties in the implementation of laws pertaining to criminal offences, their administration and enforcement.

In his keynote address, the guest speaker, Mr. Rizwan Sheikh, Cyber Law and Cyber Security expert and Founder, Pristine Info Solution, Ahmedabad and White Shark Artificial Intelligence, Mumbai, encompassed the cyber security problems while illustrating them on screen in a lucid and pragmatic manner.

Mr. Kaif Hasan proposed a vote of thanks and Mr. Sarim Konain moderated the session.
