Dr. Syed Nadeem Fatmi is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, AMU Aligarh. He was appointed as a Professor in Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women's Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi through the General Selection Committee and served there during April 2023 and February 2025, During this tenure, he also had the opportunity to work as Professor at the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, JMI, New Delhi further expanding his research and academic engagements. He has previously also held academic and research positions at BITS, Pilani and Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida.
With a Ph.D. in Sociology, he has had an extensive academic career spanning over 19 years contributing significantly to teaching, research and institutional development. He is the author of a book entitled ‘Social Ecology and Agrarian Classes’ published by Icon Publications Pvt. Ltd. New Delhi. He has a significant number of research papers, book chapters published in various national and international peer-reviewed journals of repute. He has extensive experience of teaching UG and PG courses apart from guiding Ph.D. scholars, many of whom have been awarded their Ph.D. degrees. He has scholarly contributions in the fields of Sociology of Development, Rural Sociology and Social Ecology, Gender Dynamics, Social Exclusion, CBOs, etc. He also serves on the editorial board of Journal of Exclusion Studies and also a Reviewer of some reputed journals related to his research interests.
Beyond his teaching and research, Dr. Fatmi has actively contributed to academic administration and institutional growth. He has organized and participated in numerous national and international seminars, workshops fostering interdisciplinary dialogues on contemporary sociological and allied issues.
Over the past few years he has dedicatedly worked toward creating competent and socially sensitive graduates through rigorous teaching and training the students for empirical researches. He has used a combination of participatory, experiential and creative pedagogy for transacting the curricula with a view to fostering dialogue, mutual learning and critical reflection. He in his pedagogical practices also utilizes an inter-disciplinary framework combining classical approaches with emerging areas of research inquiries.
