The Department of Biochemistry was established in 1962 as one of the Pre-clinical Departments in the Faculty of Medicine. Late (Prof.) Intisar Hussain was the founder Chairperson. The department has made enormous progress in teaching and research. The faculty of the Department has been pursuing clinically oriented research since its inception and till date 154 Ph.D., 76 M.Phil. and 50 M.D. degrees have been successfully awarded. The teachers of this Department have presented about 550 research papers in various scientific meets/conferences and have published approximately 465 research papers, mostly in reputed International Journals. The Department has successfully completed around 52 major research projects funded by agencies like UGC, ICMR, DBT, CSIR, UPCST etc. The research work of the Department has been widely acclaimed, both at National and International levels. At present 04 research projects have been submitted for funding. The Department has been identified for assistance by the DST under the FIST program in level 1 category (2009-2014) and PURSE program (2018-2019). The M.D. degree of the department is recognized by the regulatory body. The Department is presently involved in the teaching of PhD, MD, MDS, MBBS, BDS, B.Sc. Para Medical, B.Sc. Nursing besides pursuing active research. The Department is having a full fledged molecular research facility for SLE, Cancer, Tuberculosis, Diabetes and Rheumatoid arthritis. The alumni of the department have earned teaching and research positions in prestigious institutions across the globe including the United States, United Kingdom, European Nations and Middle-east.
