“Mahatma Gandhi Through the Eyes of an Artist” A Virtual Art Exhibition on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti

Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday on 2nd October is celebrated across the continent with great enthusiasm. He is known worldwide as the perennial icon of peace. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s great contribution to peace and non-violence is recognized in the whole world. This day is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-violence, as declared by UN General Assembly in 2007.

Gandhi’s way of life and philosophy has been a timeless inspiration for people from all shades of life. For an artist Gandhi is a treasure house of symbols that he or she loves to evoke. The virtual exhibition ‘Mahatma Gandhi Through the Eyes of an Artist’ organized by Department of Fine Arts and Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery, Aligarh Muslim University is showcasing Ninety art works comprising the sketches and paintings of the well-known cartoonist Mr. Sudheer Nath from his collection of cartoons and caricatures of the eminent artists of the British time on Gandhi along with the art works of the students of Fine Arts, AMU.

The famous cartoon from the series titled as Three Monkeys, evokes one of the iconic visual metaphor from Gandhi’s three wise monkeys, which represent: "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". Nath’s three monkeys are the three statues of Gandhi set against the backdrop that, ironically, contradicts the very semiotic significance of the proverb. The students of Fine Arts have expressed their understanding on the life and the role of Gandhi in freedom struggle through their sketches, paintings and portraits in this virtual Exhibition. Professor Badar Jahan, Chairperson of Departments of Fine Arts, the curator of the exhibition, emphasised that Ganhiji’s teaching of peace, harmony and non-violence would always benefit the world to a greater extent. While acknowledging the efforts of the faculty members in organising this exhibition, professor Badar Jahan apprised that the virtual exhibition will be open from 2nd to 5th

October 2020 and can be accessed from the following links:

"A Walk in Time" an International Art Exhibition in a Virtual 3D Art Gallery, Germany

"A Walk in Time" an International Art Exhibition in a Virtual 3D Art Gallery, Germany, was inaugurated online by Dr. Hameeda Tariq, on 13 of September, 2020 at 5 PM. The exhibition was curated by Prof. Badar Jahan, Chairperson, Department of Fine Arts, A.M.U. Aligarh. Prof. Badar Jahan said in her introduction that ‘It’s a matter of great satisfaction and pride that Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery and Dept. of Fine Arts, Aligarh Muslim University together have managed to organize this virtual art exhibition at the time of global pandemic of COVID-19, with which we all are fighting. This exhibition reflects that no matter how hard situation gets it cannot kill the spirit of the artist.’

There are 70 invited artists with 115 art works from 16 countries. Among these artists, 45 artists are from India and 25 artists are from other countries. The participations are received from India, USA, Germany, Morocco, Tunisia, Austria, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Nigeria, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Cutting across the geographical and cultural boundaries and the variety of styles, genres, mediums and artistic engagements makes it a distinctively unique and dynamic show.

Dr. Hameeda Tariq, in her response to the exhibition, highlighted the significance of art for making us responsive and empathetic human beings.  She emphasized that in the present world where life is largely consumed by materialistic pursuits art can rekindle human consciousness.  Dr. Tariq shared her view that a virtual exhibition can never replace the pleasure of viewing an artwork physically. Yet, she said, in coping with the demands of the present times where the artworld is equally affected, we have to reinvent new ways of making art accessible to the public. She hailed the present exhibition as a well thought and timely effort in making that possible.

The exhibition will remain live till 13th October and can be accessed from the following links:

"SOUND OF SILENCE" A VIRTUAL ART EXHIBITION

A Virtual Art Exhibition | 3D Gallery, Berlin, Germany | July 10 - Aug 3, 2020

"SOUND OF SILENCE" is the first Virtual Art Exhibition, as well as, the first Annual Art Exhibition of Dept. of Fine Arts, Aligarh Muslim University. Most of the participants of this show are Post-Graduate and Under-Graduate students of MFA & BFA. Due to the outbreak of global pandemic and the lockdown, life has been affected across the world hence, the planed exhibition for the Moinuddin Ahmad Art Gallery of Aligarh Muslim University is converted in to a virtual art exhibition which is going to be a new experience for these aspiring young artists.

While we are witnessing uncertainty and chaos everywhere, we are also witnessing positive change in our atmosphere. It's time for us to feel how beautiful this world is without the excessive encroachment of man in nature.

Whatever is happening around us is irresistible for an artist not to absorb or respond. There is misery, chaos, crisis, uncertainty and fear of losing loved ones, but then, there is also this unusual freshness in nature which has come to us as surprise. The night is silent and beautiful, the sky is sparkling blue and the air is fresh breeze these days, perhaps nature is making us realise the importance of the equilibrium between man and nature and pushing us to undo the damages we have done to the earth.

This Virtual Art Exhibition is the amalgamation of the artist's thought processes, his creative ability and his responses to the present situation. I'm sure this Virtual Art Exhibition will leave a permanent mark on the minds of the visitors
