Department of Jarahat, established in 1986, is one of the Departments of the Faculty of Unani Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh India. The department is imparting teaching and training of Ilmul Jarahat (Surgery) at U.G & P.G. level. The department of Jarahat is pioneer in starting Post Graduate course in the subject Ilmul Jarahat (Surgery) among Unani Medical Colleges in India in the year 1995. The department has a unique and fine integration of traditional Unani and latest scientific knowledge of the field with the vision of ultimate development of Unani Medicine and to explore the best possible treatment options of the disease. The department is well equipped with the latest facilities of Endoscopy, Cystoscopy, Laparoscopy, Uroflometry, ECG, Research laboratory (with facility of Heamatological, Biochemical & Microbiological investigations for research purposes for students and faculties of the Department), Seminar Library, attached with a well-furnished 120-bedded Hospital having outdoor and indoor medical care under different specialties, and fully furnished operation theatre. The department has teaching and clinical faculties both from Unani & Allopathic Medicine. Apart from performing endoscopy, cystoscopy, colonoscopy, open & minimal access surgery, Uroflometry the department has been conducting clinical trials on various Unani Medicines as a part of validation and application in contemporary era. We are actively engaged in exploring the Surgical & Medicinal treatise in Unani Medicine for research and development in this field. Recently the Department has shifted into the newly constructed building with enhanced space and infrastructure. Virtual Training Station has also been started in the Department for P.G. Scholars for initial training in the field of Laparoscopic surgery & endoscopy and with the vision to start Post P.G. Diploma courses in Laparoscopic Surgeries & Upper G.I Endoscopy in near future.
Since establishment, the department has produced many Researchers/Teachers/Surgeons who are well settled and providing their services in the field of Ilmul Jarahat (surgery). The department has successfully organized one International Conference, Three National Conferences, Two Symposium, One Teachers Reorientation Training Programme, Five Workhops, Observed World Diabetes Day, Organized two free Mega Medical Camps, completed two Research Projects sponsored by the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt of Indiaand one CME for the teachers of Ilmul Jarahat (Surgery) funded by the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt of India. The department is also contributing significantly towards patient care. From 2014 till date: 181405 patients visited OPD (around 500 patients visited OPD weekly), 3259 were admitted in IPD, 2285 open & 159 laparoscopic surgeries, 70 Cystoscopies, 350 Endoscopies, 15566 hematological and biochemical investigations and 62 Uroflometry were done in the Department of Jarahat.
