IMPORTANT LABORATORIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

Electro physiology lab: A digital EEG and ECG machine is available in the lab. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures the electrical activity of the brain, often referred as a brain-wave test. EEG is useful in diagnosis and management of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. The EEG is also used for research purposes.

Bio chemical Lab: Bio chemical lab has facility of estimation of serum lithium, potassium, and sodium. Monitoring of serum lithium is required whenever patient is put on lithium therapy.

Psychology Lab: Psychology lab is having number of psychometric tests for e.g. IQ test, projective tests, personality tests, Neuropsychological tests etc. These tests are being done by trained professionals. A specific Mind-body technique "Biofeedback" is also being administered to patients using visual or auditory feedback to gain control over involuntary bodily functions such as blood flow, blood pressure and heart rate.

Neuromodulation labNeuromodulation comprises of various treatment modalities such as brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation. Currently ECT and rTMS are being provided by trained physicians who specialize in this type of care to patients having indication for these neuro-modulatory therapeutic techniques.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
is a procedure used to treat certain psychiatric conditions. It involves passing a carefully controlled electric current through brain under general anesthesia, which affects brain's activity and aims to relieve severe depressive and psychotic symptoms. Modern day ECT is safe and effective.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a procedure in which cerebral electrical activity is influenced by a pulsed magnetic field. The magnetic field is generated by passing brief current pulses through a figure of 8 coil. The magnetic field that is generated in rTMS can penetrate the scalp and skull safely painlessly to induce a current in specific regions of the brain. It is termed repetitive TMS, or rTMS, because the magnetic stimulation is delivered at regular intervals. rTMS may be used to elicit certain desired effects in the brain (i.e. excitatory or inhibitory effects) that have shown promise for treating various conditions or illnesses such as:

Depression

Obsessive Compulsive disorder (OCD)

Schizophrenia

Chronic Headache like Migraine

Chronic Fatigue syndrome

Tinnitus

Stroke Rehabilitation
