Mobile Apps for Medical Students

UpToDate

As a healthcare professional, you make clinical decisions on the go — With UpToDate on your mobile device, you get the trusted support you need. An UpToDate mobile device provides anywhere, anytime access to the world’s leading clinical decision support solution.

Registration & Activation Steps:

  1. Access UpToDate by going to www.uptodate.com from any computer connected to your library/hospital or organization’s network.

  2. Click the Register button in the upper right corner of the screen

  3. Complete all fields on the registration form and then click Submit Registration

  4. Make note of your user name and password

  5. Download the UpToDate app in your mobile phone (if Android- Google Play Store, if Apple – App Store) after registration to use seamlessly in your mobile phone or tablet with the registered username and password.

  6. If you already have an UpToDate user name and password from a Personal Subscription or a previous access, simply click the Log In button in the upper right corner of the screen.

Details of Mobile Access

Once registered, you can install the Mobile App on upto two devices.

  1. On your Smartphone or tablet, search for ‘UpToDate’ in your app store and install the free app

  2. Open the UpToDate Mobile App upon completion of download

  3. Log in with your UpToDate username and password

  4. You only need  this once -  the app remembers your username and password

Medscape Mobile

Medscape Mobile contains selected information from WebMD's Medscape and eMedicine online sites. This is most used by physicians, medical students, nurses and other healthcare professional for clinical information which includes:

  • Medical news
  • Drug reference and interaction checker tools
  • Disease and condition information
  • Medical calculators
  • Drug formulary information
  • Continuing medical education courses

Cost: All features are available free. Log in required only for the first time using the app. New user can register for a free account.
Format support: iPhone/iPodTouch, iPad and Android

Note: Drug, condition, and procedure reference plus drug interaction checker can be accessed without an internet connection when you select the option to download the clinical reference database.


ePocrates

This popular drug resource is the single most used medical PDA application in order to provide better patient care by delivering the right information, right when it is needed. Health care professionals worldwide use this app to:

  • Find providers for consults and referrals in the Provider directory
  • Review drug prescribing and safety information for thousands of brand, generic and OTC drugs.
  • Check the potentially harmful drugs- drug interactions among up to 30 drugs at a time

Merck PTE / Merck Medicus

This is a download and local install.

This free application includes Pocket Guide to Diagnostic test and MEDLINE journals from UCentral platform although there are some unique resources including The Merck Manual, Professional Edition and Harrison's Practice - Answers on Demand.

The Merck PTE provides detailed information, state-of-the-art functions and an appealing presentation. It offers university students, teachers and professors the opportunity to learn more about the chemical elements – from classification to elements features to their history of discovery. Eponyms

A perfect free tool to quickly look up the meaning of any eponym. The simple app performs an equally simple function. It’s a dictionary (derived from eponyms.net) of 1700+ medical eponyms. The menu is straightforward but you have to click on a category or the “All Eponyms” option to reveal the search button. Once you began typing your search the app will auto-populate a list of results. When you select a result, you’re presented with the definition of the eponym.
