SOPs Standard Operating Procedure of the Office
The Office of the Department of Arabic is committed to provide a conducive atmosphere and all required support to the faculty members, research scholars, students and non-teaching staff to ensure the smooth functioning of the department.
The Office overall supervises all administrative works under the direction of the Chairperson. It monitors all accounts, purchases, correspondences, and other activities of the department, and maintains records. It monitors and expedites UGC non net and other fellowships for the students. It collects the attendance records of the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the department and records the leaves of all students and faculty. The office collects all records of examinations and marks and conveys them to the Office of the Controller in addition to providing support for all Department Entrance Tests and Admissions.
The Office ensures maintenance of all department classrooms, the Seminar library, and Language Lab. It conducts physical verification of all department physical assets and maintains the stock register, including that of the Language Lab. The office also helps during the organisation of conferences and workshops in their smooth conduct and functioning, besides helping set up all ICT for various activities.
The Office is responsible for the updating of the department website under the guidance of the Chairperson It maintains records for and delivers all internal mails circulated to and from the department.
Work Distribution
The Office has a total of 8 Non-teaching staff who work under the direction and guidance of the Chairperson.
1. Mr. Hashmat Husain, LDC (Admin) oversees the Accounts of the Department and takes care of the cleanliness of all the buildings including washrooms, maintaining the lawn, seminar library, and language lab.
2. Mr. Mohd Fazil, LDC (Admin) deals with the Teachers, Research Scholars and Students. He also manages admissions, examinations, official departmental correspondences, and other administrative work.
3. Mr. Abdul Saleem maintains office records and attendance registers of faculty, research scholars and Non-teaching staff.
4. There are 2 MTS staff Mr. Nafees Ahmad, MTS (Office Services) and Mr. Ishrat Ali, MTS (Lab Services) who maintain cleanliness of the Office, faculty chambers, and classrooms.
5. The Library has two staff members Mr. Mohd Asif Khan, Semi Professional Assistant who serves as the Librarian and Mr. Phem Ahmad, DW (Skilled) who serves as the Gate keeper and Library Attendant, and fully cooperates with other Non-teaching staff in matters pertaining to departmental works whenever needed.
6. Mr. Gulam Sabir, DW (Skilled) takes care of the Computerized Audio Video Language Lab, and fully cooperates with other Non-teaching staff in matters pertaining to departmental works whenever needed.
Note: Apart from their assigned duties, all Non-teaching staff members may be deputed for any work of the department to ensure smooth functioning of the department.

The Department of Arabic maintains clear operating procedures for optimum utilization of its resources.
The Department has a well-stocked, computerized Seminar Library with approximately fifteen thousand books which includes Arabic, Urdu and English language books. It serves faculty members, research scholars, and students, as well as anyone who would like to use the books for academic purposes. The faculty, research scholars and Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of the Department can browse for books through the OPAC and can use the books as per the Seminar rules.
1: The Seminar Library books are catalogued with Accession numbers for each, in line with the procedure followed by the Maulana Azad Library of the University.
2: The Postgraduate students have, in addition to access to all books of the Seminar in line with the MA curriculum and for NET/JRF preparation, so as to facilitate them in studying and preparing for competitive examinations. These books can be accessed/ borrowed by producing valid identity cards of the University. For facilitating this process, a Seminar Secretary is appointed from among the Postgraduate students.
3: For Undergraduate students, the seminar library has a good collection of books allocated for them covering the BA curriculum, so as to aid them in studying for the course, and help them in preparing for competitive exams. These books can be accessed by producing valid identity cards of the University.
4: The Seminar Library also provides access to previous years’ departmental question papers of Graduation, Post Graduation and PhD along with the PhD thesis list of the department.
5: The Seminar library in collaboration with Maulana Azad Library will organise a seminar on ‘Know Your library’ every year in the new university academic session for the newly admitted students in different courses of the department in order to educate them on how to make optimum use of the resources available in the library.
6: The Seminar Library has OPAC facility for its faculty and students through which they can access to desired books or documents they need.
7: The seating capacity of the seminar is 50.
8: The seminar also provides photocopy/xerox facility to the students and faculty.
9: The seminar library is fully air-conditioned and has wifi facility.
10: The Seminar library also provides newspaper facility for its user. It has subscription to 1 English newspaper and 1 Urdu newspaper.
11. The Seminar library has a good collection of books in English language as well as in Urdu language.

The Department of Arabic has a Computerized Audio-Video Language Lab to assist Undergraduate and Postgraduate students in developing and practicing Arabic phonetics and conversation in standard Arabic as well as different regional Arab dialects through programmed instructional software. The Lab is also open to research scholars and faculty for higher research in the subject.
Purpose of Language Lab
The purpose of the language lab is to familiarize students with the peculiarities and nuances of spoken Arabic providing to them a chance to practice it. This will enable them to develop their command over expressing themselves in contemporary Arabic and greatly enhance their employability within India and abroad.
The specialized audio video advance programmed instructional software available in the lab, doubled with the programmes available on the internet, give students maximum exposure to the LS (Listening & Speaking) component of the LSRW pedagogical framework.
Key Objectives of Lab Activities
To identify and correct mispronunciation with regard to peculiar Arabic sounds resulting from influences of different local and regional Indian dialects in order to attain perfect native Arab accent.
To develop good command over expression in Standard Arabic.
To maximize exposure of students to the contemporary Middle East culture and to Arabic as spoken by native Arabs.
To provide them with special expertise in colloquial Arab dialects.
To train students for interpretation.

Special Features of Language Lab
1: The usage of video in two way direct communication facility between the instructor and the learner, and visual learning programmes have increased the effectivity and utility of the lab multi-fold.
1: The lab has its own LAN making it possible to avail its facilities even during periods of unstable network connectivity or no connectivity.
2: The Internet via AMU router is also available on each machine through the unique login id.
3: All the software are licensed and the Department follows standard procedure of procurement and usage in line with the Central Computer Centre of the University.
Teaching/Learning Activities and Working Strategies
Ear Training
Familiarisation with the peculiar Arabic sounds and vocal patterns through listening to specialized software.
Familiarisation with native Arab pronunciation and accent through listening to specialized software.
2. Speech Practice
a. Practising the peculiar Arabic sounds, pronunciation and accent (with provision for recording and self-correction).
b. Identifying Remedial Measures to correct mispronunciation resulting from Local/regional dialectical influences (with provision for recording and self-correction).
3. Training in Situation based conversation using audio and visual resources (with provision for recording and self-correction).
4. Use of YouTube videos
5. Training in Interpretation (with provision for recording and self-correction).
6. Developing Familiarity with different Arabic regional dialects such as Egyptian, Syrian, Saudi (Hijazi), Iraqi, etc.
