The Department of Botany is one of the oldest departments in the university. It was established as an independent department in 1923, in which post-graduate teaching was started as early as in 1930 and research in 1935. The present building of the department came into existence in 1931 by the financial assistance of His Exalted Highness Nizam of Hyderabad. The main thrust area of teaching and research are Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Cytogenetics & Plant Breeding, Environmental Botany, Plant Biotechnology, Systemic Botany and Allelopathy. Presently, teaching activities include under-graduate and post-graduate semester courses and Ph.D. programmes. The department has made a steady progress in all these areas.

At present, 14 Professors, 02 Associate Professors and 11 Assistant Professors with 36 supporting staff are working in the department. The department has produced 04 D.Sc., 425 Ph.D. so far. About 4500 research papers and 60 books on different aspects have been published. The department has also organized Seminar/Symposium/Conference/Summer school. The department also provides training to students from various parts of the country and invites eminent scientists for delivering popular scientific talks very often. The department has distinction in having its alumni placed at various respectable positions all over the globe. The departmental library has a significant number of books and periodicals and subscribe journals. The department also maintains a Botanical Garden at the University Fort covering an area of about 95 acres. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Government of India) recommended it as a Lead Botanical Garden of North India.

The department has been identified for a special assistant grant by various funding agencies including UGC-SAP (DRS-II), DST-FIST, DST-PURSE and DBT-BUILDER. Faculty members of the department have received research projects funded from various agencies, such as Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science & Technology, University Grants Commission, UP-Council of Science & Technology, BNRS and Newton Bhabha (BBSRC-DBT) and UGC- Start up grants. Faculty members also received various awards such as INSA-Young Scientist Medal, Prof. Hiralal Chakravorty Award, Vigyan Ratan Samman, Panchanan Maheshwari Gold Medal, UGC-Research Award, UGC-Mid Career Award, Young Scientist/Eminent Scientist Award of National Environmental Science Academy. Prof. Nafees A. Khan received the recognition of Highly Cited Researcher, 2019 and 2020 (web of Science), Fellow of Linnean Society of London, Elected member of the National Academy of Sciences-India. The faculty got place in the World Ranking of top 2% Indian scientist in the subject Plant Science in a study conducted by the University of Stanford, USA. The members have also been recognized by various academic NGOs for excellence in research and teaching and honoured by various awards. They serve as specialist in various capacities in the academic bodies. The faculty members of the department received various fellowships, Raman Fellowship and INSA-DFG Fellowship, to get advance training of research abroad. They have also presented research work in national and international conferences. The department also received post-doctoral fellowship by CSIR, DST, UGC and DBT.

    Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)


    • PEO-1: To develop fundamental background and training in research in Botany including specific experimental and research skills and approaches in selected areas of Plant Science, Molecular, and Modern Biology.


    • PEO-2: To provide opportunities for the development of transferable skills; inculcate a culture of quality and responsibility in conducting research.


    • PEO-3: To enhance students’ capacity to work with others, solve problems, and think critically and innovatively in the areas chosen.


    • PEO-4: To demonstrate an understanding and concern for the high ethical standards in research, teaching, and service.


    • PEO-5: To demonstrate the ability to teach post-graduate and graduate courses in their areas of specialization.


    • PEO-6: To design and conduct relevant research themes in their areas of specialization.


    • PEO-7: To demonstrate the ability to communicate the results of their research work in a clear and explicit manner.

    Upon completion of the Ph.D. program the students will be able to:


    • PO-1: demonstrate the understanding of scientific integrity, correct scholarly records and the consequences of deviation from the standard code of conduct in research laboratories.


    • PO-2: demonstrate core competencies for innovative approaches in their respective fields that would be relevant from a global perspective.


    • PO-3: demonstrate the capabilities to serve various higher academic institutions like Colleges, Universities, and Research Institutes in India and abroad.


    • PO-4: demonstrate the ways to mitigate the disastrous effects of environmental stresses on plant productivity.


    • PO-5: apply a significant range of advanced and specialized skills to act autonomously in the planning and implementation of plant science research.

    Upon completion of the post-graduate program the students will be able to:


    • PO-1: develop critical thinking ability and will apply the knowledge to answer scientific queries and expand comprehension potential.

    • PO-2: demonstrate graduate attributes like core competency, communication skills, reflective thinking, scientific temper, research skills, digital literacy, moral and ethical awareness.

    • PO-3: develop the aptitude for creative thinking, critical analysis and decision making for productive research and development in the area of botanical sciences.

      Upon completion of the graduate program the students will be able to:


      • PO-1: acquire the practical application of basic and conceptualized knowledge of plant sciences.

      • PO-3: develop better communication skills by means of seminar presentations that will help to develop confidence for self-education and ability to engage in life-long learning.

      • PO-4: pursue various academic and professional courses and will be ready for entry-level jobs in any area of biology.
