The department of Respiratory Medicine is committed to advance the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases through integration of patient’s care, biomedical research and professional education.

To provide an environment for exceptional research among faculty members, students and research scholars.

Teach  medical students the knowledge and skills they will need to sustain this mission into the future.

To contribute towards elimination of Tuberculosis by 2025 in accordance with National Strategic Plan 2017-2025 of NTEP.

Brief History:

This department was established in 1993. Department is providing MD degree to two students every year from 1994 till 2016. From 2017 onwards MD seats have been increased to 6 seats. MD degree has been recognized by the MCI in 2007. The faculty include 3 professors,, three assistant professors and three senior residents. There are admission wards with 55 beds which include 5 beds dedicated for Respiratory ICU. Department is successfully running national tuberculosis control program (RNTCP) since 2003. The daily average OPD turnover is 250-300 . More than 200 research papers, articles and case reports have been published by the department. Many research projects have been awarded to the department by different agencies. Many fellowships of national and international chest colleges have been awarded to its faculty. There are all the modern diagnostic facilities in the department including video bronchoscope, NBI bronchoscope, thoracoscope both Rigid and Flexirigid, PFT with diffusion coefficient, 6MWT, Sleep lab Level-1.Thoracoscopic ultrasound, cryobiopsy and round the clock bed side x ray and USG facilities.

Drug resistant pulmonary tuberculosis management started in DR ward in ward 13. There are 12 bed dedicated for MDR patients with separate male /Female  cubicals .

These patients are diagnosed by sputum smear and LPA . All the medicine for tuberculosis, MDR and XDR are given free to all patients.

Department successfully organized NAPCON 2014.

Department also conducted 1 week Global Initiative of Academic Network (GIAN) Programme of MHRD Ministry in 2019 on advances in interventional bronchoscopy under supervision of Dr Jamalul Azizi, head of broncology, Malaysia as international faculty,  Prof Anant Kumar, Head of the department , Respiratory medicine AIIMS Delhi as national faculty, Prof. Mohammad Shameem Department of Respiratory medicine JNMCH AMU as organizing secretory.

Our department is also conducting prestigious trial of COVAXIN by ICMR under Prof. Md. Shameem. we were the first center to complete the 1000 volunteers for the trial. Our this effort was recognized by ICMR and Bharat biotech.


Prof. Rakesh Bhargava became the President of "NATIONAL COLLEGE OF CHEST PHYSICIAN " for year 2022-2023 .This is oldest association of Chest Physician.

Prof. Rakesh Bhargava received prestigious "INSPIRING PULMONOLOGIST OF INDIA "  given Economic Times at Hayat Hotel New Delhi. The award was presented by Health Minister of Bihar Mr. Mangal Pandey.
