The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Aligarh Muslim University organized a Satellite Symposium of the Endocrine Society of India on “Contemporary Endocrinology” under the celebration of India’s Presidency of G-20 Summit.

Addressing the inaugural function, the chief guest, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohammad Gulrez stressed the need to conduct such programmes at regular intervals to increase awareness among people regarding chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus. He emphasized that the doctors and professionals working in this area need to keep updating their knowledge as new evidences are coming up every day.

The President-Elect, Endocrine Society of India, Prof. P.K Jabbar shed light on the progressive journey of the Society from 10 to more thousand members now. He spoke about its role in promoting research in the field of diabetes and endocrinology.

Prof. Jamal Ahamd, Former Director of the Centre, stated that the centre fulfills all the norms of the National Medical Commission to start DM (Endocrinology) programme and it should apply for this at the earliest.

Prof. Sheelu Shafiq Siddiqi, Former Director of the Centre, delivered the welcomed address.

Earlier, discussing the thrust areas of the symposium, Dr. Hamid Ashraf, Director of the Centre, said that eminent faculty and experts from all over the country pondered over various aspects of the topic, including thyroid disorders, diabetes mellitus, metabolic bone diseases, pediatric Endocrinology and Women’s Endocrinology.

He said that the process of starting the DM programme has already been started. He urged the professionals and medical workers to educate diabetes patients regarding new IT based developments in controlling the disease.

He thanked the Endocrine Society of India for providing the opportunity and the necessary support to host the satellite symposium.

Dr. Nafis Faizi (Department of Community Medicine) conducted the programme.
