Prof. K. S. Mustafa joined the Department of Linguistics, AMU in 2010. Before joining here, he worked in Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, Mysore, Karnataka and its Regional Centres at Patiala, Lucknow and Solan, H. P. He gained rich and varied experience especially in the area of Applied Linguistics while he worked in these institutions. His thrust areas of research in linguistics have been descriptive linguistics in relation to Dakkhini and Urdu, sociolinguistics especially in relation to convergence and areal features of Dakkhini and its neighbouring languages, language teaching, translation and transliteration etc. Prof. Mustafa?s initiation into career began with a sociolinguistic project he was engaged in at CIIL, Mysore on Dakkhini Urdu spoken in Mysore city. Having finished this project he moved into areas such as language teaching, language testing, material production etc. One of his significant achievements at CIIL was his involvement in preparation of Primary level Urdu text books for Karnataka State in 1990-91. His reviews of the primary level Urdu and Arabic language text books of Govt. of Mauritius were adjudged to be excellent. Further his translation of English version of ?A Hand Book of Copyright law? into Urdu at the behest of Book Promotion and Copyright Division, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India is significant. Apart from these engagements he organized and conducted nearly 190 linguistics/language related programmes viz., seminars, workshops, meets, orientation programmes, refresher courses, national integration camps etc. in different parts of the country. Also participated in at least 40 national and international seminars/conferences held at different parts of the country and presented research papers in these. He has published eight books. Of these, one book titled, ?A Descriptive Grammar of Dakkhini? deals with the grammar of Dakkhini Urdu as spoken in Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh and was published by Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd. The analysis done in the book follows the canons of descriptive linguistics. Of the rest, four are primary level language text books of Karnataka State; one is a book on Urdu Rhymes; one is an anthology of Urdu poems and one is an edited Urdu poetical work. Besides these works, he has to his credit more than 50 research papers many of which have appeared in national and international journals of repute. Prof. Mustafa has been a member of Academic bodies such as Dravidian Linguistic Association, Trivendrum; Linguistic Society of India, Pune and Indian Scientific Translators? Association, New Delhi. As a member of these bodies he participates in their seminars, conferences, symposia etc. In 2005 on invitation from Govt. of Mauritius he visited Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Languages, Moka, Mauritius and delivered lectures on applied linguistics with special reference to language teaching. This visit was sponsored by Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. Prof. Mustafa?s current responsibilities include teaching, guiding research and organizing seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia etc. He is the current Chairman of the Dept. of Linguistics, AMU.
