Lecture held on advancement of nanomaterial therapeutics The Department of Pharmacology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University, organized a guest lecture on “Perspectives and Advancements in Nanomaterial Therapeutics with special emphasis on Neurodegenerative Diseases” by Dr. Saba Naqvi from National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Raebareli, who discussed the transformative role of nanotechnology in drug delivery, targeted therapies, and neurodegenerative disease management. Dr. Naqvi elaborated on how nanoparticles enhance drug bioavailability, stability, and targeted delivery, particularly in conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. She highlighted recent innovations in nanomedicine, including mRNA-based therapies, theranostic nanoparticles, nanozymes, and immunotherapy-driven nanomedicine, that pave the way for precision medicine. She discussed notable advancements in selenium, polymeric and lipid-based nanoparticles, showcasing their neuroprotective potential in multiple sclerosis and stroke models. Addressing the regulatory and safety considerations and emphasizing FDA guidelines, toxicity assessments, stability testing, and ethical concerns in nanotherapeutics, Dr. Naqvi explored the future of nano pharmacology, highlighting AI-driven drug design, 3D-printed nanomaterials, and personalized medicine as key developments. She also engaged in a lively discussion, where faculty and students explored the clinical applications and translational potential of nanomedicine. Dr. Syed Meraj Alam Fatmi presided over the lecture and the Chairman of the department, Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, along with Dr. Abhinav Tiwary coordinated the event.

Two-day event called Karwaa’n The event kicked off with a quiz that tested participants' knowledge of AMU’s history, Bollywood and Indian cinema, and the history of medicine, with both PG students and teachers joining in with great enthusiasm. Following the quiz, there was a lively debate session where participants shared their views and opinions. A high tea break allowed everyone to relax and engage in conversations. The PG students also organized a poster-making competition on the theme of "Pharmacovigilance Awareness" and a creative writing contest. In the creative writing contest, participants showcased their poetry and took part in the fun tradition of Bait Baazi. Later in the day, there were mind games like chess, ludo, and carrom that brought everyone together and encouraged friendly competition. On the second day, the finals of the chess, ludo, and carrom tournaments took place, followed by a hilarious round of Dumb Charades that had everyone in stitches. In the afternoon, the event shifted outdoors for exciting cricket, badminton, and tennis matches, providing a thrilling conclusion to the festivities. All these events were held under the guidance of organizing chairperson, Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman; organizing secretary, Dr. Ammar Khalid; and conveners Dr. Sreemedha Choudhury and Dr. Pratik Vijay Ganvir, along with their dedicated team, whose efforts made Karwaa’n 25 a memorable success. The department hopes that future juniors will continue this tradition and make it an annual celebration of fun, learning, and camaraderie. Overall, Karwaa’n 25 was a resounding success, and everyone had an unforgettable time.

CME on Patient Safety and Quality in Interprofessional Medical Curriculum A Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on "Patient Safety and Quality (PSQ) in Inter-professional Medical Curriculum" was successfully organized by the Department of Pharmacology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on March 25. The event, led by final-year residents, brought together faculty members, nursing professionals, and students to emphasize integrating patient safety principles into healthcare education. Prof. Farha Azmi, Principal, College of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, JNMC, AMU, inaugurated the CME as the Chief Guest. Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, delivered the welcome address, underscoring the importance of inter-professional education, simulation-based learning, and advocacy in embedding patient safety into medical and nursing curricula. The program featured several insightful sessions. Dr. Sreemeddha Choudhury spoke on the "BSc Nursing Curriculum 2022," emphasizing the role of structured nursing education in fostering patient safety awareness. The session was chaired by Prof. Farha Azmi, who highlighted the need for an updated and competency-based nursing curriculum. Dr. Ammar Khalid presented on "Medication Safety," focusing on preventing medication errors and ensuring safe prescribing practices, with the session chaired by Dr. Jameel Ahmad, who elaborated on the role of clinical pharmacology in reducing drug-related risks. Dr. Aditya Vikram Singh delivered a session on "Inter-professional Education," stressing the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes. The session was chaired by Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, who emphasized fostering teamwork among healthcare providers. Dr. Anam spoke on "Integrating Simulation-Based Education and Technology-Enhanced Learning for PSQ into Faculty Training," advocating for modern teaching methods to enhance clinical decision-making. Her session was chaired by Dr. Irfan Ahmad Khan, who discussed the benefits of simulation-based learning in medical education. The program concluded with a lecture by Dr. Pratik Vijay Ganvir on "Acceptance, Advocacy, and Dissemination for PSQ," focusing on policy implementation and institutional commitment to patient safety. Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, who chaired the session, encouraged advocacy efforts to integrate patient safety as a core component of medical education and clinical practice. Moderated by Dr. Isna Rafat Khan, the CME fostered interdisciplinary discussions among faculty members, postgraduate scholars, and healthcare professionals, highlighting the importance of collaboration, curriculum development, and policy advocacy in ensuring quality healthcare delivery.

CME on Current Perspective on Pharmacovigilance on 16.4.2025 The Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Monitoring Centre (AMC) at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), successfully organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program titled “Current Perspective on Pharmacovigilance” on 16th April 2025. This academic event was specially designed for faculty members and resident doctors from JNMC and ZADC, under the auspices of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI), Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The Chief Guest, Prof. Mohammad Habib Raza, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, AMU, inaugurated the session and delivered the keynote address. He underscored the vital role of clinicians in reporting all suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs), regardless of whether they are known or unknown, serious or non-serious, frequent or rare. Prof. Raza emphasized the importance of active participation in the national PvPI initiative and its effective implementation at the institutional level within JNMC. He lauded the efforts of AMC at JNMC. The programme was coordinated by Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Professor of Pharmacology and Coordinator of the AMC at JNMC. In his opening remarks, he highlighted the critical role of ADR reporting in enhancing drug safety and public health. He called upon all stakeholders including clinicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, and even patients to contribute to the system by reporting any adverse drug reactions they encounter. Prof. Rahman reiterated that pharmacovigilance is not just a professional duty but a moral responsibility of everyone involved in healthcare. The scientific session of the CME featured a series of enlightening talks by distinguished speakers: Dr. R.S. Ray, Scientific Assistant at IPC, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, provided insights into the current landscape of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India and its evolving impact on national healthcare systems. Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, in a second session, discussed the role of ADR Monitoring Centres (AMCs) and presented data and outcomes reported by the JNMC centre, showcasing its contributions to national pharmacovigilance efforts. Dr. M. Wasif Khan, Head of Global Pharmacovigilance & Global QPPV at Evolet Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, shared the industry perspective on pharmacovigilance. He also highlighted emerging career opportunities for healthcare professionals in this rapidly growing domain. Prof. Kamran Afzal, Department of Paediatrics, JNMC, delivered a focused talk on Pharmacovigilance in the Paediatric Population, addressing the unique challenges and importance of ADR monitoring in children. The event concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Dr. Imrana Masood, Deputy Coordinator of AMC-PvPI and Assistant Professor in the Department of TBRD, JNMC. She appreciated the efforts of all participants, speakers, and organizing members who contributed to the success of the CME. A special mention was made of Mr. Gufran Ali, Pharmacovigilance Associate, for his significant role in coordinating and executing the event. Additionally, Dr. Nachiket Brahmankar, Dr. Isna Rafat Khan, and Dr. Supriya Sahu, Junior Residents in the Department of Pharmacology, were acknowledged for efficiently conducting the proceedings throughout the program. Guest Lecture by Dr. Samina Salim, Associate Professor of Pharmacology, Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences University of Houston College of Pharmacy, Houston, TX, 2.1.2024 The Department of Pharmacology at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH), Aligarh Muslim University, organized a lecture on “Understanding Stress - Insights from Psychological, Behavioral, and Biochemical Studies”, by Dr. Samina Salim, Associate Professor of Pharmacology from the University of Houston, Texas, USA. Dr. Samina Salim, a prominent figure in this field, delivered a groundbreaking lecture on “Oxido-Inflammation,” a term coined by her research team. She shared her translational research work from animal models to human stressful environments. The whole discourse explored the intricate relationship between Oxido-Inflammation and stress, drawing extensively from Dr. Salim’s impactful studies, notably her work with Syrian refugees settled in the United States and Jordan. The discussion provided a deep dive into the intersection of psychological, behavioral, and biochemical factors contributing to stress, offering a comprehensive understanding of this prevalent health concern. The audience, comprising faculty members, students, and researchers, actively participated in the session, posing insightful questions to Dr. Salim. Expressing gratitude for the insightful session, Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology, JNMCH, delivered a vote of thanks. He acknowledged Dr. Salim’s valuable contributions and the active participation of attendees.

Interactive seminar on "Voice of Medicine vs. Voice of Lifeworld Communication: Communication and Patient Compliance Dilemma" The Department of Pharmacology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized an interactive seminar on "Voice of Medicine vs. Voice of Lifeworld Communication: Communication and Patient Compliance Dilemma" on 24.7.2024. The colloquium featured Dr. Shariq I. Sherwani, a senior faculty member at the Department of Communication, Utah Tech University, St. George, Utah, USA, as the keynote speaker. Dr Sherwani shared insights into the importance of effective communication between healthcare providers and patients, emphasizing the distinction between the "Voice of Medicine" and the "Voice of Lifeworld." He said that the Voice of Medicine prioritises evidence-based treatment. In contrast, the Voice of Lifeworld focuses on patients’ emotions and paves the way for the prevention of injuries or diseases, instead of treating them in the case of Voice of Medicine. He illustrated his points with case studies, highlighting the critical role of empathy from doctors and cooperation from patients' relatives in maintaining patients’ health. He also emphasized the point of digital prescription for the convenience of patients and also to avoid any casualty due to misunderstanding of the handwriting. The seminar also featured a short video on empathy, titled "The Human Connection to Patient Care," which reinforced the importance of compassionate communication in medical practice. Earlier, welcoming the guest speaker, Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, introduced him to the audience and highlighted his achievements in clinical and pre-clinical research. He said Dr Sherwani is a Faculty Chair for the Policy Steering Committee and a dedicated Public Policy Advocate and Community Educator for the Alzheimer’s Association, Utah Chapter. "With a diverse academic background, including a PhD and Master of Arts from Ohio University, an MBA and a Master of Applied Clinical and Preclinical Research from the Ohio State University, and a Master of Science in Agricultural Microbiology from AMU, Dr. Sherwani brought a unique blend of expertise to share his views at JNMC," added Prof Rahman. Prof. Khalid A. Sherwani, former Chairman, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, shared his thoughts on the art of writing prescriptions in good handwriting, stressing its benefits for both the patients and healthcare professionals. Dr. Jameel Ahmad extended a vote of thanks while Dr Riya Sharma, a junior resident, conducted the programme.

Akbarsha, on 22.11.2023 The Department of Pharmacology, JNMC, AMU, Aligarh, organised University Extension Lecture on “Drug Discovery for Cancer from Indian Traditional Medicines Adopting Reverse Pharmacology” by Prof. M. A. Akbarsha, Biomedical Scientist and Research Coordinator, National College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli and School Coordinator & Dean of Science (Retd), Founder, Mahatma Gandhi-Doerenkamp Center (MGDC), and Former Doerenkamp Chair, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, at LT-1, JNMC, AMU, Aligarh. He shared his research work on generating scientific proofs for efficacy and safety of Indian medicines and the discovery of few drug molecules from Indian medicines for cancer particularly scientific proofs for efficacy and safety of Rasa Genthi Mezhugu, a Siddha Medicine, for cancer. Likewise, he shared his experimental results using prostate cancer cell lines, lung cancer cell lines and breast cancer lines and how he identified Urushiols as the major active principle of the Siddha herbal medicine Semecarpus Lehyam as antitumor agents for treatment of breast cancer. Earlier, Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, introduced the speaker and thanked Prof. Nisar Ahmad Khan, Coordinator, University Extension Lectures, Department of Economics, while Dr. Jameel Ahmad welcomed him with the presentation of bouquet. Orientation Programme for MD Pharmacology residents admitted batch 2023 on 1st November 2023 The Department of Pharmacology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU, Aligarh organized an orientation programme specifically for MD Pharmacology residents admitted batch 2023 on 1st November 2023. Professor Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology welcomed the newly admitted batch of 12 residents in the Dept. of Pharmacology. He showed satisfaction that the Dept. is gaining popularity as a subject and first time all the seats are filled by the external candidates. After a brief introduction of the importance of the orientation program, he delved into the life and contributions made by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. He spoke at length how Sir Syed laid the stress on the importance of modern scientific education for all netizens particularly for Muslims community. Dr. Jameel Ahmad, Assistant Professor, highlighted the facilities available at Aligarh Muslim University. He emphasized the significant contributions made by eminent alumni of the university in nation development. Dr. Bushra Hassan Khan, Assistant Professor, delineated the historical background of JNMC. She shared the contribution made by stalwarts of JNMC in the establishment of this prestigious medical college. She also shared the ranking status of the college for the last one decade. Dr. Irfan Ahmad Khan, Assistant Professor detailed about the historical background and facilities available for the residents in the department of Pharmacology. Further, he also explained the recent NMC guidelines and regulations for the MD Pharmacology course. Dr Shamema P, JR 2 conducted the programme while Dr. Ammar Hasan JR2 started the program with beautiful qirat. All teachers, senior and junior residents of batch 2022 and 2021 also participated.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2023 (31.10.2023) A pledge taking ceremony on “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” marking the birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel was held on 31.10.2023 at 10.30 am in the Demonstration Room of the Department of Pharmacology. Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman Dept of Pharmacology, briefed that every year 31 October is celebrated as National Unity Day to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, who hails from Karamsad, Gujarat. His contribution to the unity of India is incredible and every year, we celebrate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti as National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) on this date. Indo-Saudi Pharma Symposium on ‘Research Avenues’, 9.8.2023 The Department of
Pharmacology, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized an Indo-Saudi Pharma Symposium on ‘Research Avenues’ as a
part of the celebratory programmes being held in AMU to mark India’s Presidency
of G-20 Summit on 9.8.2023. Prof Mohammad Asif Hussain, Biomedical Engineering Options, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, King Abdul Aziz University, KSA, shed light on the new developments in biomedical research and discussed his projects on nanotechnology, three-dimensional nanomaterials and other biomaterials used as various medical applications to support, enhance or replace damaged tissue or a biological function. Dr Ishrat Rahman, Department of Pharmacology, Princess Nourah Bint Abdul Rahman University, KSA, shared her views on newer entities in oral cancer research, green phytonutrients and pre-clinical drug and vaccine development. Dr Misbahuddin Rafiq, Department of Pharmacology, King Abdul Aziz University, KSA, highlighted the importance of research in his academic career and shared his experience of managing independent research grants in KSA. He underlined the significance of his research in an integrated approach to clinical therapeutics using pharmacogenomics tools, with a special focus on diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders. Earlier, welcoming the guests, Prof Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, underscored the need for holding the symposium, especially for the young students.
